Botho Strauß veröffentlichte 1977 seinenProsatext MarlenesSchwester ZweiErzählungen, der die Erzählungen Marlenes Schwester und Theorie der Drohung enthält. Die voneinander zunächst unabhängigen Texte weisenjedoch einige Gemeinsamkeiten auf: Beide zeigen ein Individuum, das an der Gesellschaft gescheitert ist. Die Hauptprotagonisten sind Außenseiter, die sich in der modernen Welt nicht zurechtfmden und sich schließlich verwandeln.
Diese Arbeit sucht die Frage zu beantworten, mit welchen Mitteln die Verwandlung der Protagonisten in Strauß’ Doppelwerk Marlenes Schwester. Zwei Erzählungen dargestellt wird und welche Bedeutung sie für die Interpretation des jeweiligen Werkes einnimmt.
Die Arbeit gliedert sich in drei Teile. Um Erkenntnisse entsprechend der Aufgabenstellung zu erhalten, bedarf es einiger theoretischer Grundlagen, die primär dargestellt werden. Zunächst muss der Begriff „Metamorphose“ lexikalisch geklärt werden. Welche Bedeutung dieses als „Verwandlung“ übersetzte Geschehen in der Literatur übernimmt, verdeutlicht ein Blick auf die Metamorphosen des antiken griechischen Autors Ovidius Naso, kurz Ovid. Die Metamorphosen in diesem Werk stehen, wie die Gestaltveränderungen bei Botho Strauß, in einem größeren narrativen Kontext. Anhand des Ovid’schen Hauptwerks, das die größte Sammlung von Verwandlungsgeschichten enthält, können die Funktionen und verschiedenen Arten der Verwandlung verdeutlicht werden.
Auch der Zusammenhang zwischen Mythos und Metamorphose ist an dieser Stelle zu klären, denn wie Ovid nutzt Botho Strauß den Mythos als erklärendes Element.
In Botho Strauß’ Texten verschwimmen häufig Realität und Fiktion miteinander. Es entsteht eine Mehrdimensionalität. Leerstellen oder Brüche, können mit gegebenen intertextuellen Bezügen oder anhand mythischer bzw. religiöser Elemente gedeutet werden. Für Strauß eröffnen diese Verweise eine tiefere Dimension im Text, deren Bedeutung über den Inhalt des eigentlichen Werkes hinausgeht.1 Im Gegensatz zu Ovid, der den Mythos zu Erklärung der Wert nutzt, dient er bei Strauß dazu, eine Wirklichkeit zu beschreiben, die über das menschliche Bewusstsein hinausgeht.2
Ovids menschliche Metamorphosen sind göttlich bedingt und zeigen den wahren Charakter des Menschen auf. Daher vermag sich ein jeder Mensch prinzipiell zu verwandeln.
Der französische Theoretiker Roland Barthes widmet sich in seinem Werk Lust am Text der Metamorphose des Schriftstellers. Das Subjekt nimmt in all seinen Texten immer eine mit Sprache handelnde Rolle ein, z. B. diejenige des Lesers.3 Diese Konzentration auf Barthes’ Überlegungen und den damit verbundenen eingeschränkten Personenkreis wird vorgenommen, da auch die Protagonisten in Botho Strauß’ Erzählungen Marlenes Schwester und Theorie der Drohung schöpferisch tätig werden, indem sie schreiben oder erzählen. Beide Texte werden zudem aus der Perspektive der Hauptfigur dargestellt, weshalb die Protagonisten bereits sprachlich in Aktion sind.
Barthes’ Ausführungen beschränken sich auf die Schrift, die jedoch durch die Sprache geprägt ist. Weil sich ihrer auch die Protagonisten der beiden Werke bedienen, ist Barthes’ Verständnis der Verwandlung, die mit der Sprache in Form von Schrift vollzogen wird, eine wichtige Voraussetzung, um die Metamorphosen beider Strauß’schen Texte nachzuvollziehen. Nach Barthes’ Ausführungen transformiert die Schrift einen Teil des Autors in sein eigenes Werk, das dadurch zu einem selbstständigen Körper wird. Die Metamorphose wird damit zu einem automatisierten Prozess des leidenschaftlichen Schreibens. Das Kapitel 1.3 soll eine Antwort auf die Frage liefern, was leidenschaftliches Schreiben im Sinne Barthes’ bedeutet, wie die Verwandlung in Text zu verstehen ist und welche Rolle dem Schriftsteller dabei zukommt.
Die schriftstellerisch oder erzählerisch tätigen Strauß’schen Charaktere stellen keine ausgeglichenen Persönlichkeiten dar. Sein Prosawerk aus den 70/80er-Jahren beschreibt zudem vielfach schwierige zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen.4 Strauß’ Figuren befinden sich in einer Identitätskrise, die sich auf ihr Kommunikationsverhalten auswirkt. Vor der Analyse ist es zunächst nötig zu klären, auf welche Weise Sprache und Identität Zusammenhängen, um die sprachlichen Schwierigkeiten der Figuren im Text verstehen zu können. In Kapitel 1.4 wird der menschliche Identitätsbildungsprozess kurz erörtert. An dieser Stelle wird außerdem auf die konstruierende Kraft der Sprache eingegangen, denn sie hat großen Einfluss auf die individuelle Persönlichkeit. Diese sprachliche Funktion spielt in Strauß’ Werk eine bedeutende Rolle.
Die nun folgende Analyse in Kapitel 2 untersucht die beiden Erzählungen des Werkes getrennt voneinander. Da die Innen- und Außenwelt der Figuren in beiden Texten miteinander konkurrieren und die Realität für den Rezipienten5 nicht deutlich erkennbar ist, kann in der Analyse keine klare Trennung beider Erzählebenen vorgenommen werden. Die verschiedenen Fiktionsebenen werden deshalb beim Versuch einer Deutung aufeinander bezogen.
In Marlenes Schwester soll die konstruierende Funktion der Sprache anhand von Erinnerungen und Erzählungen deutlich werden und so den Bezug zu Roland Barthes hersteilen. Zudem wird untersucht, welche Bedeutung den vielen bildhaften Elementen wie Blut und Wasser im Text zukommt und inwieweit sie mit der Beschreibung der Metamorphose der weiblichen Hauptfigur in Verbindung stehen. Diese Untersuchung soll die mythologische bzw. religiöse Orientierung des Autors Strauß aufzeigen und so den Zusammenhang zu Ovids Geschichten hersteilen.
In Kapitel 2.2 wird der Text Theorie der Drohung auf die sprachliche und bildliche Darstellung der Verwandlung hin untersucht. Mythologische Assoziationen und Verweise referieren in diesem Werk auf Ovids Metamorphosen, wobei neben dem Wasser hier vor allem fantastische Wesen eine große Rolle in der Beschreibung der Verwandlung spielen.
Roland Barthes’ Überlegungen zur Schrift werden in diesem Werk aufgegriffen. Der schriftstellerische Hauptprotagonist erfährt die Transformation in einen Teil seines Werkes am eigenen Leib. Die theoretischen Ausführungen Barthes’ werden von Botho Strauß in eine Erzählung übernommen. Hier wird deutlich, wie Strauß Roland Barthes versteht.
Neben der Verwandlung der männlichen Hauptfigur findet eine weitere Metamorphose statt, die die konstruierende Macht der Sprache in Form von Erinnerungen und Gedanken verdeutlicht.
Den Schluss vorliegender Arbeit bildet die Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse in einer Ab Schlussbetrachtung.
Im Folgenden sollen die wichtigsten Begrifflichkeiten und die grundlegenden Überlegungen dieser Arbeit deutlich werden. Der Begriffsbestimmung des Lexems „Metamorphose“ folgt eine Einführung in Ovidius Nasos Vorstellung von Verwandlung. Im Anschluss daran wird ein Einblick in Roland Barthes’ Textverständnis gegeben, das unmittelbar mit seinem Gedanken von einer Transformation während des Schreibprozesses in Verbindung steht. Nachdem kurz die Realitäts- und Identitätsbildung mithilfe der Sprache anhand der Überlegungen des Konstruktivismus erläutert wurde, werden diese mit Strauß’ Literatur verknüpft.
Der Begriff „Morphose“ kommt vom griechischen Wort „morphae“, was „Gestalt“ bedeutet.6 Eine „Metamorphose“ ist demnach eine „Über-“ oder „Zwischengestalt“, was im Allgemeinen mit „Gestaltwandlung“ übersetzt wird. Eine solche Verwendung des Wortes ist jedoch unzureichend, da die konkrete semantische Bedeutung des Präfixes „Meta-“ als „Über-“ oder „Zwischen-“ keine Beachtung findet. Dabei ist „Metamorphose“ nicht als verwandelte Anschauungsform einer Gestalt zu verstehen, sondern meint vielmehr eine prozesshafte Verwandlung, die noch nicht abgeschlossen ist. Sie „imaginiert“7 einen Vorgang, der beschreibt, was sich in Wahrheit nicht beschreiben lässt - den aktiven Vorgang eines Werdens, einer performativen Wandlung, die in eben diesem Moment geschieht. In ihrer schriftlichen Form ist die Metamorphose dabei „artikulierte Zeit im doppelten Wortsinn: Zum einen ,zergliedert‘ sie jene abstrakte Zeit, die zwischen zwei Zuständen liegt. Zum anderen ,drückt‘ sie diese mit dem Verfahren der ,Literatur‘ aus.“8 Das Medium lässt nun diese „Zwischengestalt“ erkennbar werden, die ohne die Literatur nicht greifbar bliebe.
In der Forschung gibt es keine einheitliche Begriffsdefinition, weshalb das Wort „Metamorphose“ eine vielfältige Bedeutungsvariation aufweist und häufig recht unpräzise gebraucht wird. So lassen sich beispielsweise auch biografische oder geschichtliche Veränderungen zum Bedeutungsbereich der „Metamorphose“ zählen.9
Diese Arbeit schließt sich Friedmann Harzers Definition an, nach der eine Metamorphose jede Art physischer, psychischer und natürlicher Verwandlung ist.10 Sie kann auf logischen, naturwissenschaftlichen Ursachen beruhen oder durch übernatürliche, mystische Kräfte hervorgerufen werden.11 Diese Definition schließt sämtliche Verwandlungsvorgänge ein, was sich für die Analyse von Einzeltexten als sinnvoll erweist.
Die Verwandlung der äußeren Gestalt ist zunächst in mythischer Überlieferung und unabhängig vom menschlichen Wesen bekannt. Ihren Ursprung hat sie in der Vorstellung, die ganze Natur sei belebt und Werk einer göttlichen Schöpfung. In antiken Schöpfungsmythen ist die Metamorphose ein häufiges Mittel, um die Entstehung der Welt und des Menschen zu beschreiben, und grundsätzlich mit dem Göttlichen verknüpft. In der mesopotamischen Mythologie beispielsweise entsteht die Erde aus dem getöteten Leib des Gottes Tiamat, und der Mensch geht aus einer Metamorphose von Lehm, Blut und Fleisch eines Gottes hervor.12 Eine ähnliche Vorstellung der menschlichen Schöpfung findet sich im antiken Ägypten. Hier entsteht der Mensch aus Ton und Lehm auf einer Töpferscheibe.13 In Afrika erzählten sich die Menschen, ihresgleichen seien aus Wasser und Lehm entstanden.14 Doch auch in der nördlichen Mythologie sind Verwandlungsgeschichten bereits bekannt. Die Wikinger pflegten die Vorstellung, dass eine Eislandschaft den Ursprung der Welt bilde, die von einem Riesen und einer Kuh bewohnt werde. Götter und Menschen seien aus dem Schweiß des ersten Riesen Ymir entstanden. Als dieser bei einem Kampf mit den Göttern getötet worden sei, hätten sie aus seinem leblosen Körper das Meer, die Erde, den Himmel und die Berge geformt.15
Bei den Maya im antiken Mittelamerika fand sogar eine mehrfache Metamorphose statt, bis der Mensch vollkommen war: Die Götter formten demnach den Menschen zunächst aus Lehm, mussten aber feststellen, dass diese so den Regen nicht überleben konnten. Anschließend verwandelten die Götter Holz in Männer und Schilf in Frauen, die zwar sprechen, aber nicht denken konnten. Schließlich ließen die Götter den Menschen aus Mais entstehen.16
Auch die Azteken kannten bereits Verwandlungsgeschichten. In den Mythen über die Entstehung der Welt zeigt sich, dass die Azteken an vier vorausgegangene Welten glaubten, die jedoch alle von den Göttern zerstört wurden. In den tradierten Erzählungen über die Zerstörung der ersten und zweiten Welt lassen sich Metamorphosen finden: „Der erste Weltbeherrscher ist Tezcatlipoca. Nach 676 Jahren beschließt sein Bruder Quetzalcoatl, die Macht an sich zu reißen: Er wirft Tezcatlipoca ins Meer, verwandelt sich in einen riesigen Jaguar, vernichtet die Riesen, die auf der Erde wohnen, und führt das Weitende herbei. [...] Die zweite Welt wird von Quetzalcoatl regiert. Tezcatlipoca rächt sich: Er lässt einen großen Sturm wüten, der auf der Erde alles mit sich reißt, und verwandelt die Menschen in Affen.“17
Es wird deutlich, dass die Metamorphose stark mit dem Mythos verknüpft ist. Der Mythos wird als erklärende Erzählung über Götter oder Ereignisse aus der vorgeschichtlichen Zeit definiert, die ihre Aussage bis in die Gegenwart transportiert.18 Ihm kommt die Funktion zu, über den Ursprung der Welt, der Menschen und der gesellschaftlichen Ordnung aufzuklären. Während der Mythos das prozesshafte Werden der Welt erläutert, vermag die Metamorphose genau dieses Werden narrativ zu beschreiben. In diesen Verwandlungserzählungen verschwimmen stets Realität und Fiktion. So wurden Verwandlungserzählungen bereits in der Antike tradiert und rezipiert, mit dem Mythos verknüpft und schließlich zusammengetragen.
In Märchen und mündlichen Überlieferungen wurden die Verwandlungsgeschichten schließlich ohne göttliches Zutun mit Menschen und Tieren in Verbindung gebracht. Darin dienen die Metamorphosen ausschließlich einem pädagogischen Zweck. Doch Märchen sind im Gegensatz zu Mythen bewusst erfundene Erzählungen und versuchen nicht, die Wirklichkeit zu erklären. Mythen stellen hingegen die „Gegebenheiten in Natur, Gesellschaft und Individuum in bildhaft-symbol. Form dar“19 und begründen Phänomene des gegenwärtigen Alltags.
Die Verbindung von Mythos, Verwandlung, Aufklärung und pädagogischem Nutzen beschäftigte auch den bekannten und bis weit ins Mittelalter stark rezipierten griechischen Philosophen und Schriftsteller Ovidius Naso, kurz Ovid. Er vereinte in den ersten zehn Jahren n. Chr. 250 Verwandlungsgeschichten in einem 15-bändigen Epos, den Metamorphosen. Stofflich entlehnt er dabei bekannte griechische Literatur und überlieferte Mythen.
In seinem chronologisch geordneten Werk von der Schöpfung bis zu seiner Gegenwart entwirft Ovid im Versmaß des Hexameters eine fortlaufende „Universalgeschichte“20, welche die mündlich und schriftlich überlieferten Verwandlungserzählungen in einen Zusammenhang bringt. Mit genealogischen Übergängen, der Einbettung in einen weiten Erzählrahmen, religiösen Ätiologien - Erzählungen, durch die etwas Unerklärliches verständlich gemacht wird21 - und der chronologischen Form schafft Ovid eine Verbindung zwischen der Welt der Götter und der Gegenwart seiner menschlichen Generation. Viele profane Vergleiche verringern die Distanz zwischen menschlicher und göttlicher Ebene. Der Mythos wird so untrennbar mit der Geschichte von Ovids Gegenwart verknüpft.22 Dabei verfolgt Ovid auch ein pädagogisches Ziel: Aus den Schicksalen der Figuren soll eine Lehre für das eigene Leben gezogen werden.
Ovids Metamorphosen beschreiben die äußerlich sichtbare Veränderung von Menschen, Göttern oder Pflanzen. Die Verwandlung versteht er als ein natürliches Grundprinzip des Lebens, das alle Lebensformen betrifft, denn „nichts auf der ganzen Welt ist beständig! Alles fließt undjede Erscheinung wandelt sich im Laufe der Zeit!“23 Der Prozess der Metamorphose verändert lediglich das Äußere des Verwandelten, seine inneren Werte und seine wahren Eigenarten bleiben erhalten. So wandeln sich Menschen äußerlich beispielsweise in Tiere oder Pflanzen, aber ihr Wesen ändert sich durch die Metamorphose nicht. Durch die Gestaltwandlung offenbart sich der eigentliche Charakter des Verwandelten.24
Unangemessenes Verhalten oder das Verschleiern des wahren Wesens erscheinen häufig als Grund für eine Verwandlung.
Gerhard Fink spricht in seiner Einführung zu Ovids Werk25 sogar von Metamorphosen, die von „innen nach außen“26 angelegt seien, wodurch sich die „äußere Verwandlung aus der inneren [...] erklären“27 ließe. Dieser Ausführung ist nach Ansicht der Verfasserin vorliegender Arbeit nach deutlicher Lektüre des von Fink genannten Beispiels nicht zuzustimmen. Zwar ist die äußere Erscheinung mit der inneren verknüpft, es gibt jedoch keinen Hinweis auf eine primär innere Verwandlung. Fink verweist auf die Verwandlung lykischer Bauernjungen in Frösche, nachdem sie sich „froschmäßig“ verhalten hatten.28 Sie waren in einen Teich gesprungen und hatten im Schlamm gewühlt, woraufhin sie von einer Göttin in Frösche verwandelt wurden. Nach Finks Überlegungen zur Metamorphose von innen nach außen müssten die Jungen schon vor ihrer äußeren Wandlung in Frösche innerlich verwandelt worden sein, was der Grund für ihr schlechtes Benehmen und ihre Arroganz wäre. Darauf gibt es jedoch keinen Hinweis. Ovids Anliegen ist es vielmehr, den wahren Charakter in eine „passende Form“ zu bringen. Er beschränkt sich auf eine von außen wahrnehmbare Verwandlung. Innerliche Metamorphosen und Verwandlungen des Geistes oder des Charakters sind in diesen Verwandlungserzählungen nicht vorgesehen. Dies berücksichtigend, erscheint der Verfasserin die Verwandlung als eine göttliche Strafe für das unangemessene Verhalten der Bauern, wobei die äußere Form nach der Verwandlung auf natürliche Weise dem Verhalten der Jungen und ihrem wirklichen Charakter entspricht: Die Jungen verhalten sich wie Frösche - also werden sie in eben diese verwandelt, um ihre wahre Natur aufzuzeigen. Diese Interpretation wird durch Bradtkes These unterstützt, die die Intention der Metamorphose darin sieht, den wirklichen Charakter des Menschen deutlich hervorzuheben.29 Finks Ausführungen lassen sich demnach dahingehend korrigieren, dass das Innere des Menschen selbst (und nicht erst die Verwandlung des Inneren) Auswirkungen auf seine Verwandlung haben kann. Zu betonen ist allerdings, dass das Verhalten der Personen einen Hinweis auf die Verwandlung geben kann.
Neben ihrer sanktionierenden Funktion, die den Menschen abwertet, was von Hegel als Degradation bezeichnet wird,30 kann die Metamorphose auch für eine göttliche Belohnung stehen, die den Betroffenen auf die übernatürliche Sphäre ausrichtet (Ascension). Die Verwandlung war zunächst nur den Göttern Vorbehalten, die sie schließlich als besonderen Dank an auserwählte Menschen Weitergaben.31 Auch bei der Erhaltung von Leben hat die Metamorphose eine Bedeutung, da sie das Fortleben einer sterbenden Person in einer anderen Lebensform gewährleisten kann.32 Zudem lassen sich in Ovids Metamorphosen Flucht oder Rettung vor etwas oder jemandem sowie Täuschungen ebenfalls als Grund für eine Gastaltwandlung ausmachen. Injedem Fall ist die Verwandlung von Intentionen geleitet.33
Sprachlich ist Ovid dabei ebenso vielfältig wie seine Verwandlungsgeschichten: So lassen sich in den Metamorphosen sachliche Schilderungen, emotionale Reden oder nachdenkliche Monologe finden, die allesamt eine Verwandlung beschreiben, hauptsächlich die sichtbare körperliche Verwandlung des Menschen.34 Doch der Begriff „Gestaltwandlung“ schließt im Allgemeinen auch eine geistige oder spirituelle Veränderung des Menschen oder sogar von Gegenständen nicht aus. Derartige Auffassungen der Metamorphose sind auch heute noch im christlichen Bereich vertreten:
Nach der katholischen Transsubstantiationslehre werden bei der Eucharistiefeier sowohl der Wein als auch das Brot bzw. die Hostie in das leibliche Fleisch und Blut Jesu Christi verwandelt. Bei der im Luthertum geglaubten Realpräsenz ist Christus in der Gestalt von Brot und Wein in dem Moment der Weihung real gegenwärtig.35 Auch Reinkarnationsvorstellungen, bei denen die Seele in einem anderen Körper wiedergeboren wird, sind Teilbereiche der Metamorphose.36
Diese Beispiele machen deutlich, dass Mythos und Religion immer noch eng mit Metamorphosenvorstellungen verbunden sind und der spirituelle Begriffsgebrauch durchaus psychische Verwandlungen einschließt. Daher wird heute hauptsächlich zwischen zwei Metamophosenkonzepten unterschieden: Bei der physischen Metamorphose verändert sich die äußere Gestalt, und die psychische Verwandlung beschreibt eine nicht sichtbare, innere Gestaltwandlung.37 Beide Formen der Metamorphose können auch zusammen an einem Wesen auftreten, wobei das eine das andere Konzept bedingen kann.
Sprachlich können sie in kontinuierlicher, durch Übergänge sichtbarer Form oder sprunghaft dargestellt werden.38 Die kontinuierliche Darstellung führt den Leser langsam und gleichmäßig durch den Werdeprozess. Dies ist beispielsweise im Alterungsprozess des Menschen der Fall.
Eine sprunghaft geschilderte Metamorphose hingegen, die Veränderung mit einem klaren Vorher-nachher-Vergleich deutlich macht, z. B. die Belebung eines Toten, ist für den Leser auf rationaler Ebene schwieriger nachzuvollziehen.
Ovid erklärt mit mythischen Verwandlungsgeschichten den Zusammenhang zwischen der irdischen und der göttlichen Welt. Als gängiges Mittel verwendet er Ätiologien, die Elemente der Schöpfung, gesellschaftliche Gegebenheiten und sprachliche Konventionen auf bildhafte Weise begründen. So erklärt sich beispielsweise die Existenz und Benennung von Narzissen dadurch, dass der Sohn eines Flussgottes mit dem Namen Narkissos in ebendiese Blume verwandelt wurde.39 Dieser Mythos wird nun Teil der gelebten Gegenwart und begründet die sprachlichen Konventionen und Werte einer Gesellschaft. Diese vorherrschenden gesellschaftlichen Gewohnheiten und die Schöpfung selbst werden durch die Verwandlungsgeschichten erklärt. Sie sind das Ausgangs- und das Endelement einer jeden Metamorphose.
Auch der französische Schriftsteller und Philosoph Roland Barthes verknüpft Schöpfung mit einem Verwandlungsgeschehen. In seinen Theorien beschränkt er sich auf den schöpferischen Akt der Textherstellung. Sein Verwandlungssubjekt ist der Schriftsteller. Er verwendet die Metamorphose als Folge eines leidenschaftlichen Schreibprozesses. Die Verwandlung wird dabei als eine komplette Auflösung des eigenen Wesens zugunsten des neu geschaffenen Textes gedeutet, in der der Autor zu einem Teil seines eigenen Werks wird.40
Um seine Deutung der Metamorphose als Transformation des Subjekts in Schrift nachzuvollziehen, bedarf es eines Einblicks in Barthes’ Verständnis von Schrift und Textentstehung. Das folgende Kapitel unternimmt den Versuch, Roland Barthes’ Auffassung von Sprache, Schreiben und der sogenannten „Lust am Text“ aufzuzeigen und mit der Auflösung des Schriftstellers in Zusammenhang zu bringen.
1973 veröffentlichte Roland Barthes (1915-1980), der als einer der bedeuteten Zeichentheoretiker Frankreichs gilt, sein Werk Le Plaisir du Texte41, in dem er den Zusammenhang von leidenschaftlichem Schreiben und Identitätsverlust des Autors erörtert. Seine Werke tragen allesamt keine Gattungsbezeichnung. Bis heute ist daher die Tendenz seines Gesamtwerks nicht eindeutig klassifiziert: Häufig ordnet man es der Semiologie als Teilbereich der Linguistik zu,42 wozu sich auch Le Plaisir du Texte zählen lässt. Durch die Mehrdeutigkeit, viele Brüche oder Verflechtungen entstehen oftmals Leerstellen, die es erschweren, dieses Werk einer Gattung zuzuordnen, sodass es auch als literarisches Werk rezipierbar ist - eine Option, die hier aber vernachlässigt wird.
Die Mehrdimensionalität gilt als typisch für Barthes’ Überlegungen. Er schafft dadurch neue Bedeutungsbeziehungen und Konnotationen, wodurch wiederum Räume für neue, tiefer gehende Zusammenhänge entstehen, die auf bereits vorhandene Aspekte verweisen. Es zeigt sich, dass sein Denken „stets Zwischenräume schafft und abgeschlossene Prozesse in andere Kontexte überführt, der Denkform einer Spirale gleich, die Linearität und Zirkularität miteinander zu verbinden sucht“43.
Wesentlich für die Beschreibung des Barthes’schen Verständnisses der Sprache ist deren besondere stilistische Form, die „écriture“. Seinen Überlegungen zufolge gibt es drei Dimensionen der schriftlichen Form: Die Sprache - „langue“ - ist das dem Autor bekannte Sprachsystem und dessen Kodierung, an denen er sich orientiert und die ihm die Möglichkeiten seines Schreibens vorgeben.44
Im künstlerischen Stil verbindet sich das Schreiben mit dem Autor selbst. Dabei versteht Barthes den Stil nicht als „Ergebnis eines bewußten künstlerischen Entscheidungsprozesses, sondern wie die Sprache [- als] eine ,blinde Kraft‘, [...] die nicht einer Intention, sondern einem Impuls“45 folgt. Dieser unbewusste Prozess kennzeichnet die Individualität des Textes und diejenige seines Schöpfers. Der Text wird dabei vom Inneren, dem Unbewussten seines Autors, mit dessen persönlichem Stil versehen. Die Assoziationen mit Sigmund Freuds Psychoanalyse, der das Unbewusste im menschlichen Geist ebenfalls als eine organisierte Kraft versteht, die sich außerkörperlich auswirkt,46 sind unverkennbar. In der Tat inspirierten Freuds Arbeiten über das Unterbewusstsein des Menschen Barthes’ Überlegungen zur Schrift. Er versteht die Sprache und die Schrift als etwas Lebensnotwendiges, das die Bedürfnisse des Menschen erfüllt. „Sie fungieren als Ersatz für das Sich-Einverleiben von Nahrung [,..].“47 Wie das Unterbewusstsein ist der persönliche Stil im Inneren des Autors vorhanden und wird erst durch den Schreibprozess sichtbar.
Die écriture als dritte Dimension der Form nähert sich am ehesten der semantischen Bedeutung von „Schreibweise“' an.48 Sie ist jedoch nicht zu verwechseln mit dem persönlichen Stil des Autors. Die Schreibweise im Barthes’schen Sinne verbindet das geschaffene Werk mit der Gesellschaft, indem der Autor durch diese Schreibweise auf seine jeweiligen Konventionen und Geschichte verweist. Im Text nimmt sie dabei eine wichtige soziale Funktion ein, denn sie schafft eine „Beziehung zwischen dem Geschaffenen und der Gesellschaft.“49 Diese Dimension bindet den Autor an gegebene Traditionen seiner ethnologischen Gemeinschaft, weshalb die écriture einen wichtigen Teil der Persönlichkeit und des konventionellen Hintergrunds des Autors darstellt. Ottmar Ette spricht diesem Element des Schreibens sogar eine moralische Rolle zu.50 Die écriture ist demnach gleichsam ein Teil des psychischen und kulturellen Einflusses auf das Schreiben. Andererseits ist sie aber auch physisch mit dem Schriftsteller verbunden und wird von Barthes als „körperliche, an die Hand gebundene Tätigkeit“ verstanden.51 Damit dient die menschliche Hand des Autors als Verbindungsstück zwischen Körper, Schrift und Text.52
Der Schriftsteller greift in seinem Schreiben stets automatisch auf bereits vorhandenen Text zurück - sei es durch die Verwendung eines Sprachmusters, bestimmten Stils oder auch nur durch das Wissen über kanonisierte Literatur eines Kulturkreises. So bezieht er sich in seinem Schreibprozess bewusst oder unbewusst auf bereits Vorhandenes und schafft damit eine Verbindung zu anderen Schrifterzeugnissen. Dies und die Tatsache, dass ein Schriftsteller auf das konventionalisierte Schriftsystem angewiesen ist, führt ihn in ein Dilemma: Um Neues zu schaffen, muss er auf Vorhandenes zurückgreifen.53 Kein Text kann so für sich alleine stehen; er ist immer ein Geflecht aus Zitaten.54 Daher versteht Barthes alles Geschriebene als ein unendliches Netzwerk aus Texten, als ein Gewebe.55 Das Zitieren wird zur Basis aller Textentstehung, die wiederum die bekannte Welt des Geschriebenen abbildet. Intertextualität ist damit ein Merkmal schriftlicher Sprache. Sie wird als Koexistenz mehrerer Texte verstanden, die „ineinander übergreifen in Form von Zitaten, Anspielungen, Plagiaten, intertextuellen Verweisen jeglicher Form“56 oder in anderer Weise aufeinander verweisen.57
Barthes knüpft mit seinen Gedanken von Intertextualität als Grundbaustein jedes Textes an Julia Kristevas Auffassung an, die den Text als ein auf andere Literatur verweisendes und mit ihr in Dialog tretendes Geflecht versteht.58 Für Barthes und Kristeva besitzt das Geschriebene eine eigene Produktivität, indem es neue Zusammenhänge und Bedeutungen zwischen Texten schafft.59 Der aktuelle Text erhält damit eine weitaus tiefer gehende Wirkung, als ursprünglich vom Autor beabsichtigt. Das Geschriebene lässt sich bis ins Unendliche mit anderen Texten verknüpfen und schafft dadurch immer wieder neue Beziehungen und Interpretationsansätze. Die Wiederholung und Zitation von Text im neuem Werk ist vergleichbar mit einer Spirale:60 Alles kehrt auf einem tiefgründigeren Niveau zurück und ermöglicht neue Einblicke und Deutungsansätze von bereits Vorhandenem. Die Bedeutung des Textes ist unendlich, eine Interpretation findet keinen Schluss. Daher kann dem Text eine Selbstständigkeit zugeschrieben werden.
Als Schwierigkeit erweist sich das Auseinanderklaffen von Signifiant und Signifié. Die Verbindung eines sprachlichen Ausdrucks mit dem bezeichneten Gegenstand ist willkürlich. Nur so können verschiedene Sprachen entstehen. Damit sich Personen eines gemeinsamen Kulturraums verständigen können, werden die lautlichen Bezeichnungen (Signifiant) bestimmten inhaltlichen Bedeutungen (Signifié) zugeordnet. Die Sprache ist also immer konventionell geprägt. Der Text des Autors drückt nun aber ggf. etwas ganz anderes aus als das, was der Schriftsteller selbst beabsichtigte, denn „sobald die Dinge benannt sind, verlieren sie einen Teil ihrer Wahrheit“61. Signifiant und Signifié müssen nun nicht mehr automatisch zueinander passen und aufeinander verweisen. Hier werden die Grenzen von Gottlob Freges Verständnis der pragmatischen Wortbedeutungen62 deutlich: Die Bedeutung des geschriebenen Wortes ist nicht mehr mit dem Referenzobjekt gleichzusetzen, auf das sich der Autor bezieht. Im Gegenteil: Der Text schafft eine neue Realität durch die Schrift, wodurch das Signifiant zum Signifié wird. Aus diesem Konflikt kann sich der Schriftsteller nicht befreien, da er an das Sprachsystem gebunden ist und auf es zurückgreifen muss. Die letztendliche Deutung des Textes und der ihm zugeschriebenen Wahrheit kann der Autor nicht beeinflussen, sie obliegen dem Rezipienten.
Nach Barthes gibt es keinen klar zu definierenden Anfangspunkt der schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit.63 Das eigentliche Schreiben beginnt mit dem Lesen, was jedoch erst durch Schrift möglich ist. Lesen und Schreiben sind in Barthes’ Vorstellung eng miteinander verknüpft. Die Schnittstelle dieser Überlegung ist der Text. Ohne ihn ist ein Lesen undenkbar, und die Schrift hätte keine Intention. Wie oben dargestellt, nimmt der Text eine eigenständige Position ein. Er wird zu einem selbstständigen Geschöpf und sagt mehr aus, als vom Autor beabsichtigt. Sein Mehrwert wird jedoch erst durch die Rezeption deutlich, was die These, dass Lesen und Schreiben voneinander abhängig seien, nochmals verdeutlicht. Der Text als Gewebe wird zu einem eigenständigen Körper, der „in das Spiel mit den Körpern von Lesenden wie Schreibenden tritt“64.
Das Verhältnis von Rezipient und Autor wird durch die menschliche Begierde gestärkt: Während der Leser den Text lesen möchte, drängt es den Schriftsteller dazu, ein Werk zu erschaffen.65 Der Text wird so zum Objekt der Begierde. Barthes versteht ihn sogar als erotischen Körper.66 Begierde meint hier eine erotische Erfahrung, „die mit dem Schreiben, der Schrift, verknüpft ist. Diese Verknüpfung von écriture und plaisir ist sowohl von der Seite des Schreibens als auch von der des Lesens her gegeben.“67
Barthes unterscheidet zwei Arten von Textniveaus: „Langweiliger“68 Text orientiert sich am Leser und weist sich durch eine primitive, lieblose, intentionale Sprache aus.69 Der Schriftsteller akzeptiert das Schriftsystem und schafft einen Text, der primär der Rezeption dient. Autoren dieses Textniveaus schreiben aus einer Stimmung, Laune oder Lust heraus.70 Das Schreiben ist dabei immer ein bewusster Vorgang. Leidenschaftliches Schreiben hingegen entsteht durch eine Begierde, einem inneren, unerklärlichen Drang zum Schreiben, aus der „Lust am Text“ und ist eine „erotische Erfahrung“71.
In diesen Erzeugnissen soll keine Stimmung ausgedrückt werden; Text, Stimmung, Emotionen und Autor sollen vielmehr mit dem Geschriebenen eins werden. Dabei wird die Schrift zur höchsten Wissenschaft der Sprache.72 Die Sprache ist für Barthes aber keinesfalls zweitrangig oder unwichtig - es geht ihm um eine Schrift, die im Text ganz Sprache wird, sich mit der Körperlichkeit des Autors verbindet und doch aus seinem Inneren kommt.73 Der körperliche Akt des Schreibens und die écriture verschwimmen74 und verbinden sich mit der Wollust. Die Leidenschaft und das Schreiben sind nicht mehr voneinander zu trennen. Der Text zielt dabei nicht auf die Rezeption ab, sondern dient dem Schreiben und der écriture selbst. Er „wird nicht mehr als körperloses Artefakt, als unabhängiges Gebilde von Zeichen präsentiert, sondern mit dem Körper verbunden. [...] Schrifttext und körperliche Stimme verschmelzen hier miteinander, so wie sich auch plaisir (Lust) und jouissance (Wollust) nicht [klar] voneinander trennen lassen.“75
Das Unmögliche in Sprache zu fassen, ist ein wichtiges Merkmal des Textniveaus der Wollust.76 Die Werke zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass sie nur um der Schrift willen entstehen. Sie gehen dabei über das „Plappern“77 hinaus. Der Autor nimmt sich aus dem Schreibprozess heraus und überlässt das Schreiben ganz sich selbst. Das Schreiben wird zu einem Loslassen des Selbst und zu einer Angelegenheit des eigenen Inneren.78 Das ,,[S]ich[-V]erlieren“79 im eigenen Text ist Merkmal dieses Textniveaus, denn es drückt die Leidenschaft und Begierde des Schriftstellers aus. Durch dieses Vorgehen ist die Identität des Autors nur noch in der écriture vorhanden.80
Den Wert des Geschriebenen lässt sich nicht mehr an seinem Inhalt ermessen, sondern an der Art und Weise, wie sich der Selbstverlust des Autors in der Schrift zeigt. Diese neue Form des Geschriebenen widerspricht allen Regeln herkömmlichen Schreibens und folgt, einem Kunstwerk gleich, nur eigenen, neuen, nicht nachvollziehbaren Grundsätzen. In Texten der Wollust sind alle sprachlichen Elemente neu codiert und von jeglicher lexikalischen Bedeutung befreit. Der Text beinhaltet Brüche, Leerstellen, Mehrdeutigkeiten, Widersprüche und drückt ein verändertes Sprachbewusstsein aus, doch gerade das macht nach Barthes den Reiz dieses Schreibens aus, denn „alles ist besser als die Regel“81. Über die Texterzeugnisse lässt sich kein Diskurs führen, denn das Verständnis dieser Texte liegt in ihrem eigenen Inneren.82 „Man kann nur ,in‘ ihm sprechen, auf seine Weise, in ein frenetisches Plagiat eintreten.“83 So wird das Lesen des Textes, in dem sich der Autor verliert, auch zu einem Selbstverlust des Lesers.
Häufig erscheinen diese Texte fragmentarisch, da die Wollust durch das Zusammenführen von Sprachen und verschiedenen Texten entsteht, die parallel zueinander stehen.84 Durch die Wollust wird an sich Unvereinbares miteinander verbunden. An dieser Stelle wird erneut der intertextuelle Charakter von Text deutlich.
Wie versteht Barthes nun aber die Verwandlung des Autors in einen Teil seines eigenen Werkes? In dem Moment, in dem der Autor sein Werk beginnt und er durch die écriture einen Teil seines Selbst unbewusst an den Text preisgibt, verliert er einen Teil seiner Identität an das Geschriebene. Das Unterbewusstsein und die écriture werden nur im Text sichtbar. Je mehr der Schriftsteller schreibt, desto mehr Identität offenbart er in seinem Text; und was bereits niedergeschrieben und benannt ist, verliert einen Teil seiner Realität. Das Unbewusste wird in der Schrift erkennbar und zeigt sich auch dem Autor, der es in der Rezeption seines eigenen Werkes einerseits als einen Teil von sich identifiziert, es andererseits jedoch für einen Fremdkörper hält, der unabhängig vom bewussten Schreibakt in den Text einflossen ist. Die écriture steht nun einem bewussten Schreiben gegenüber. Der wollüstige Autor befindet sich in einem Dilemma, denn er gibt sich dem Schreiben hin und merkt gleichzeitig, dass der Schreibprozess ihn selbst verändert. Es kommt schließlich zu einer inneren Spaltung. Der Schriftsteller wird „ein gespaltenes Subjekt, das im Text sowohl die Beständigkeit seines Ichs als auch seines Sturzes genießt“85. Auch hier ist die Parallele zu Freuds Theorie der gespaltenen Individualität in ein Ich, das mit dem Bewussten gleichgesetzt werden kann, und ein Es, das das Unterbewusstsein, Imaginäre, den Instinkt und die Triebe verkörpert, unverkennbar.
Der Autor der Wollust selbst ist nur ein passiver Schöpfer und verliert sich ganz an seinen Text, indem er sich dem bloßen Schreiben hingibt. Das Unterbewusstsein und die écriture bestimmen nun den Schreibprozess, der sich von dem eigentlichen Ich des Autors löst. Der Text wird ein intertextuelles Geflecht, das auf sich und gleichzeitig immer auf andere Literatur verweist und in der Rezeption eigenständig wird. Durch die Dynamik der Textentstehung verweist der Text auf weitaus mehr, als vom Autor beabsichtigt. Barthes definiert diesen außergewöhnlichen Umstand der Lust am Text als jenen Moment, „wo mein Körper seinen eigenen Ideen folgt - denn mein Körper hat nicht dieselben Ideen wie ich“86. Der Text entfremdet sich von seinem Schöpfer und wird selbstständig.
Durch écriture gibt der Autor einen Teil der eigenen Identität an den Text preis, wodurch der Verfasser selbst Teil seines eigenen Textes wird. Hierin besteht die Auflösung in der Schrift. Diesem Vorgang kann sich der leidenschaftliche Schriftsteller nicht entziehen, denn er hat sich seiner Schrift bereits hingegeben. Das Individuum des Autors tritt zugunsten von Schrift und ihrer Eigenständigkeit zurück. Nun bestimmt das Unterbewusstsein den Schreibprozess alleine, und der Text verselbstständigt sich. „Die hermeneutische Annahme, daß ein Text die Artikulation, Expression oder Repräsentation eines ihm vorgängigen, ihn begründenden Subjekts darstellt, lehntBarthes ab.“87
Der Autor wird zum Rezipienten seines eigenen Werks und erkennt, dass der Text gerade im Moment des Lesens unabhängig und eigenständig wird. Beschreibendes und Beschriebenes stimmen nicht mehr überein. Die Eigendynamik seiner Schrift lässt sich nicht mehr aufhalten. Ihm wird deutlich, dass „der Text durch ein ständiges Flechten entsteht und sich selbst bearbeitet; in diesem Gewebe - dieser Textur - verloren, löst sich das Subjekt auf wie eine Spinne, die selbst in die konstruktiven Sekretionen ihres Netzes aufginge.“88
Diese Auflösung vollzieht sich so lange, bis der Schriftsteller als Subjekt mit eigener Identität nicht mehr existiert; er ist nun ein Teil des eigenen Textes.89 Dabei wird der Autor nicht getötet, er wird „durch den Akt der Verschriftlichung subtilen Transformations- und Differenzierungsprozessen unterworfen“90, wodurch er selbst zu einem Teil seines Geschriebenen wird. Auflösung bedeutet hier also nicht ein Nichtmehrvorhandensein, sondern eine Transformation, eine Umwandlung in Text. Die Bedeutung, die Barthes der Metamorphose zuschreibt, liegt demnach in der Verwandlung des Schrittstellers in einen Teil seines eigenen Werks. Oder anders ausgedrückt: Das Schreiben hat den Identitätsverlust des Autors an seinen Text zur Folge.
Doch warum stehen Sprache und Identität in einem derart engen Verhältnis? Der Text wird nach Barthes zu einem eigenständigen Körper, der eine eigene, tiefere Wahrheit vermittelt. Er konstruiert somit eine neue Wirklichkeit. Für Barthes bedeutet Sprache vor allem Schriftsprache, doch auch Sprache in Form menschlicher Gedanken und Erinnerungen sind maßgeblich an der Identitätsbildung des Menschen beteiligt.
Eine genaue Analyse des Verhältnisses von Sprache und Identität auf linguistischer Ebene sowie einer psychologischen Rekonstruktion des Identitätskonzepts ist für die Beantwortung der in vorliegender Arbeit aufgeworfenen Fragestellung nicht relevant. Da Barthes’ Überlegungen zur Verwandlung des Autors in einen Teil des Textesjedoch wesentlich für die nachfolgende Analyse von Beispieltexten sind, ist es wichtig, den Zusammenhang von Sprache und Identität nachzuvollziehen. Daher soll das folgende Kapitel das Konstrukt von Identität kurz erläutern und es mit Barthes’ Verständnis von Sprache in Zusammenhang bringen. Es möchte zudem erklären, in welcher Weise es der Sprache möglich ist, eine eigene Realität zu konstruieren und sich so zu verselbstständigen.
Neben Roland Barthes sehen auch andere Autoren eine Beziehung zwischen Identität und Sprache. Einer von ihnen ist der deutsche Autor Botho Strauß, dessen Texte neben der Metamorphose des Subjekts auch häufig den Verlust von Identität und Sprache sowie dessen Folgen thematisieren. Seine Texte verdeutlichen zudem die Konstruktion von Wirklichkeit durch die Sprache.
Der Text bildet für Roland Barthes eine eigene Welt, die stets auf sich selbst verweist und doch tiefer gehende Erkenntnisse hervorbringt - ähnliche einer Sprachspirale. So, wie das Geschriebene immer wieder neue Deutungsmöglichkeiten hervorbringt, sieht sich auch das Subjekt einer stetigen Veränderung unterzogen. Die menschliche Identität wird durch die Sprache oder Schrift für einen kurzen Moment fixiert. Doch wie der Text einer Spirale gleicht, so befindet sich auch das Subjekt im Wandel und ist in seiner Identität niemals dauerhaft konstant. Daran anknüpfend folgert Barthes, dass Sprache und der menschliche Körper unzertrennlich miteinander verbunden seien und dass sich das Individuum erst durch seine Sprache als ein eigenes Selbst definiere.91
Die Identitätsbildung ist ein Prozess und macht den Menschen erst handlungs- und kommunikationsfähig.92 Das Individuum versucht seine eigenen Vorstellungen von sich selbst (persönliches Ich) mit derjenigen Person zu verknüpfen, für die die Außenwelt dieses Individuum hält (kollektives Ich).93 Auf letzterer Ebene sind vor allem Informationen über Konventionen und Rollenerwartungen wichtig. Der Mensch orientiert sich zur Ausbildung einer eigenen Identität an den Unterschieden zwischen diesen beiden Vorstellungen, die er zu korrigieren versucht. Halt findet er anjeglichen Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen dem persönlichen und dem kollektiven Ich, die das menschliche Selbstbewusstsein (Bewusstsein von sich selbst als Person, also persönliches Ich) stärken. Ein ausgewogenes Verhältnis der inneren und äußeren Perspektive gibt dem Menschen schließlich eine eigene Identität.94 Dabei sind Körper und Geist in einem ausbalancierten Verhältnis.
Bereits Platon erkannte diese beiden Elemente der Identitätsbildung, die nach ihm jedoch unabhängig voneinander zu betrachten sind.95 Heute ist bekannt, dass Körper und Geist in einem engen Wechselverhältnis stehen, beide für eine gesunde Identitätsentwicklung verantwortlich sind und dass eine Spaltung oder eine Inkongruenz beider Ichs zu einer starken inneren Krise führen kann.96 Ein wiederholtes Nachdenken über Eigenes, mit dem sich das Individuum identifiziert, und Fremdes, von dem sich das Individuum abgrenzen möchte, ist ein wichtiges Ereignis im Identifikationsprozess. Auf diese Weise versucht der Mensch die Spannung zwischen kollektivem und persönlichem Ich auszugleichen. Sich wiederholende Ereignisse, Rituale und häufige, positive Verstärkung oder Zuspruch von der Außenwelt, die dem persönlichen Ich entsprechen, verstärken die Identität und das eigene Selbstgefühl. Bei jeder positiven sowie negativen Erfahrung überprüft das Individuum seine eigenen Vorstellungen von sich selbst und diejenigen seitens der Außenwelt. Es ist nicht ungewöhnlich, dass dabei Korrekturen an dem persönlichen Ich vorgenommen werden. Mit diesem Überarbeitungsprozess bildet sich ein fester Kern der eigenen Identität aus. Aletta Hinsken versteht die Bildung der eigenen Identität ebenfalls als Prozess, „bei dem die einzelnen Bauteile in einem fragmentarischen Zusammenhang eine auflösbare Modulation darstellen, vor deren Hintergrund ausgetauscht und eingesetzt werden kann. Dieser Prozess findet bei der [...] Identitätsbildung im Allgemeinen, in einer stetigen zitathaften Wiederholung statt, worin sich die Beständigkeit zunächst des Zitatments und dann der
Identität manifestiert.“97
Haben mehrere Individuen Gemeinsamkeiten wie z. B. eine gemeinsame Kultur, Tradition und verwenden sie die gleiche Sprache, einsteht eine Identifikation mit diesen Werten und ein Gemeinschaftsgefühl zwischen den Menschen. Die Identität und das Selbstbewusstsein der Mitglieder dieser kulturellen Gruppe werden gestärkt. Diese Gemeinschaft definiert sich dann beispielsweise durch ihre Gemeinsamkeiten in der Sprachverwendung, wodurch Sprache zu einem Teil der menschlichen Identität wird.
Neben weiteren Komponenten wie z. B. Selbsterfahrung, Motivation, Herkunft ist auch die Vergangenheit ein entscheidender Identitätsfaktor. Bedeutungsvolle Situationen und vor allem Erinnerungen helfen dem Individuum, seine Lebensgeschichte aufzuarbeiten.98 99 Die Identität wird dabei über das Erinnern in seiner sprachlichen Form (durch Gedanken) und Erzählen von Geschichten konstruiert. So werden zeitliche Zusammenhänge hergestellt, die Vergangenheit mit der Gegenwart verbunden und Erwartungen an die Zukunft begründet."
Die Sprache beeinflusst das menschliche Denken, denn Denken wird als Reflexion verstanden. Um zu reflektieren, müssen die Gedanken sortiert, gegliedert und in eine Ordnung gebracht werden. Bei dieser Art der Klassifikation wird allen Gedanken dabei automatisch ein sinnhafter Gehalt zugeordnet. Gedanken mit einem ähnlichen Sinn werden zusammengefasst. „Die sinnliche Beziehung der Einheiten nun, zu welchen gewisse Portionen des Denkens vereinigt werden, um als Teile anderen Teilen eines grösseren Ganzen, als Objekte dem Subjekt gegenübergestellt zu werden, heisst im weitesten Verstände des Wortes: Sprache. [...] Die Sprache beginnt daher unmittelbar und sogleich mit dem ersten Akt der Reflexion.“100
Sobald der Mensch reflektiert/nachdenkt, handelt er durch das Medium der Sprache. Nur dank ihr gelingt es, die Gedanken zu strukturieren, sich zu erinnern und Erfahrungen zu klassifizieren. Der Gebrauch der Sprache ist eine Voraussetzung für menschliches (Nach-)Denken und wird im Denken schöpferisch tätig. Die Sprache erschafft etwas Eigenes, Selbstständiges und ist damit mehr als nur Medium zur Kommunikation.
Nur mit der Sprache gelingt es außerdem, das eigene Selbst und die Umgebung wahrzunehmen, da alle Sinneseindrücke sprachlich geordnet werden. So klassifiziert sie auch die individuellen Eindrücke von der Welt und erschafft das Verständnis des jeweiligen Individuums von der Wirklichkeit. In seiner Wahrnehmung erkennt der Mensch jedoch immer nur einen Ausschnitt der Wirklichkeit. Dies ist vor allem den Selektionsprozessen seiner Sinneswahrnehmung geschuldet, die auch durch die Sprache gesteuert werden. Die Welt ist nur in dem Maße erkennbar, in dem das Gehirn die Informationen nutzt. Der Konstruktivismus geht davon aus, dass der Einzelne in seiner Wahrnehmung nicht die Welt im eigentlichen Sinne und in ihrer Vollständigkeit erfasse. Die wahre Wirklichkeit und die konstruierte Sicht auf die Welt würden dabei klar voneinander getrennt. Dennoch meint der Mensch, dass das, was er wahmimmt, der Wirklichkeit entspräche.101 Denn durch Wiederholungen werden Sinneseindrücke und Wahrnehmungen der Realität gefestigt. Aber auch die Interaktion mit anderen Menschen und der Austausch von Wahrnehmungen zementieren das gedanklich geschaffene Konstrukt der Wirklichkeit: Haben mehrere Menschen den gleichen Eindruck von der Wirklichkeit, wird dieser bestätigt. Unterscheiden sich die Wahrnehmungen, so müssen Konstrukte korrigiert werden.102 Die persönliche Sicht auf die Welt wird durch gedankliche Prozesses, die auch sprachliche Prozesse sind, konstruiert. Sprache konstruiert also eigene Wirklichkeiten. Dabei dient die Sprache nicht dazu, die Welt abzubilden, sondern schafft eine neue Realität.
Auch für Botho Strauß besteht die primäre Funktion der Sprache darin, einen neuen realen Raum zu schaffen, eine neue Wahrheit.103 Die Individuen seiner Werke stellen meist Außenseiter dar, die sich aus der Gesellschaft zurückziehen und nur wenige Bezugspersonen haben, mit denen sie sprechen können. Einige befinden sich zudem in einer Phase des Umbruchs, die sich auch auf das Kommunikationsverhalten der Figuren auswirkt. Häufig sind die Charaktere nicht mehr interaktionsfähig, wodurch ein gesellschaftliches Leben unmöglich wird. Dieser Rückzug aus der Gemeinschaft lässt ein weiteres Problem deutlich werden: Das Großstadtleben bedeutet für Strauß die Selbstpräsentation des Individuums.104 Dies ist der Raum, in dem den Personen eine Identität zugeschrieben wird. Ist die Figur nun im öffentlichen, gesellschaftlichen Raum nicht mehr präsent, so ist sie auch als Individuum mit eigenem Sein nicht mehr vorhanden.105
