This study aims to assess the challenges and prospects of women’s political participation in Kirkose Kifle Ketema Woreda 02, focusing on the barriers to their involvement in decision-making processes and the potential strategies to empower them for more equitable political representation.
2.11.1 Cultural Factors
Ethiopian society can be described as a male dominated patria-lineal and patriarchal society. Traditionally, women are regarded as the backbone of society, primarily because they are responsible for the biological reproduction of the lineage and alliances. Historically, however, women are known, accepted, and expected to exert political influence indirectly through their husbands and their kinsmen. A cultural belief in male superiority and greater ability to leadership assigns women inferior positions from a very early age (Nagaad, 2007). The gender role ideology is used as an ideological tool by patriarchy to place women within the private arena of home as mothers and wives and men in the public sphere (Adamu & Mekonnen, 2009).This is one of the vital factors that shape the level of women’s political participation in Ethiopia.

The research explores the various challenges and opportunities related to women’s political participation in Kirkose Kifle Ketema Woreda 02, aiming to identify why women remain underrepresented in local decision-making positions.
It covers gender and development studies, specifically analyzing socio-cultural barriers, economic factors, legal frameworks, and the influence of patriarchal ideologies on political engagement.
The primary goal is to assess current levels of female participation and investigate the factors that discourage women from entering politics, while seeking solutions to rectify the political imbalance in the specific region.
The study utilizes a qualitative research methodology, incorporating focus group discussions (FGD), document analysis, and in-depth interviews with key informants and council members.
The main sections discuss the historical overview of women in politics, review relevant literature, describe the qualitative research design, and present an in-depth analysis of the survey data and findings from Woreda 02.
The study is characterized by keywords such as women's political participation, empowerment, gender mainstreaming, and socio-cultural barriers to leadership.
Traditions often enforce a patriarchal model where women are restricted to domestic roles, and political engagement is erroneously viewed as a masculine domain, creating significant social barriers for women aspiring to leadership.
Women often bear the primary responsibility for domestic and household chores, which consumes the time and energy required for active engagement in political campaigns and community decision-making roles.
Many women face a lack of family support, fear social stigma (being labeled 'unfit' as mothers), and feel they lack sufficient knowledge or information about the political processes to compete effectively.
The researcher recommends institutionalizing gender audits, providing specific political training for women, creating enabling environments through gender-sensitive policies, and fostering a cultural shift to challenge male-dominated political paradigms.
