This thesis explores the media framing of the first round filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), examining how three major news outlets in Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt reported on the issue. The study focuses on the Ethiopian Herald, Sudan Tribune, and Ahram online, analyzing their news stories from June 1st to July 31st. The research aims to understand how these media outlets framed the GERD filling within their respective national contexts and agendas. This study will contribute to a better understanding of how media influences public opinion and contributes to international discourse on critical issues such as water resources and regional cooperation.
Chapter One introduces the research topic, provides a background on the GERD project, and outlines the problem statement, objectives, significance, scope, and organization of the study. Chapter Two delves into the review of related literature, exploring the history of the Nile River, the development of the GERD, past agreements and disputes, and the filling process. This chapter also provides a comprehensive overview of framing theory as the theoretical framework for the study.
The key terms and concepts explored in this thesis include: GERD, Nile River, Impoundment of the GERD Reservoir, Controversy over the GERD, Blue Nile/Abbay, Framing Theory, Agenda Setting, Media Coverage, National Interests, and Regional Cooperation.
