This research aims to show the perspective, consequences, and understanding of why lesbians interact with people using fake identities/profiles in social media. Lesbians are the "L" in the LGBT community who is attracted only to women. Researcher-filmmaker chose this kind of concept because of her personal experience with fabricated identity. Not only can lesbians make fake identities, but this study will also focus on how lesbians interact with fake identities in social media. In the researcher-filmmaker's methodology, she interviewed the other opinions and perspectives of the lesbian creator of a fake profile. Her analysis will be going to be guided by theoretical frameworks of Hyperrealism and Radical Feminism.
This research explores Lesbians in Philippine society and how their identity developed in social media. This research's goal is to present the Researcher-filmmaker's understandings of lesbianism in the Philippines and its construction of identity in social media based on interpretation of Angie Umbac in "Lesbians in Philippine society"
and Susan Herring's Gender Identity in social media as well as other related works and art forms, by using film as a medium of output.
The word "lesbian" uses to define if a female has a sexual and romantic desire. That word refers to women who classify themselves as having a primary characteristic of a gay woman (Schwartz, 2016).
The term most generally used to introduce to the male gay or gay man is "bakla," a constriction of the words "babae" (female) and "lalaki" (male). "Bakla" alludes to feminine men, with cross-dressing as a noteworthy record highlight (Tan, 1995a).
Lesbians are subjected to catcalls and told, "get yourself a genuine man." These terms and dialect feature the observation that women found connected to men (Umbac, 2004).
According to the survey of three gay men students in college, Filipino gay men and lesbians reported experiencing heterosexism in school, at home, and in religion (Mastajo et al., 2005). Heterosexism is an individual's negative attitude to gay men, lesbians, and sexualities (Herek,1995). It is sometimes called anti-prejudice or homophobia. Many Filipinos have a terrible opinion of gay and lesbians (Tan et al., 2001). Homosexuality is by all accounts endured in Filipino society.
Lesbians in the Philippines know about the societal observation that they are alcoholics and speculators. Among the qualities connected to them are being non-monogamous, touchy, and fierce. However, even though these negative pictures cut crosswise over various gatherings in the public arena and are not predominant among lesbians, numerous lesbians are still prejudged. Numerous lesbians have conceded that they provoked to work harder and prevail in life so that they may transcend societies doled out the picture of them (Umbac,2004).
In the article entitled "Life Formations" by Libay Linsangan Cantor, she stated that before she turned 24, she found much more attracted to women than men. It was the point at which the idea of lesbian rights acquainted with her. Libay trusts that "there are still a ton of issues that need to confront; however, I think what people have to deal with first is how to work with each other, and how they will connect with those inside the LGBTQ people group yet who are outside the promotion circles," she said. "There are a bigger number of individuals outside than inside, and that must tend to." (Dela Cruz, M. 2012).
In order to strengthen their relationships and to share information with family and friends, women utilize social media. Men are more ahead when it comes to the use of technology and also in using social media tools. On different social media sites, people are used to keeping several profiles. In the last five years, Facebook has undoubtedly taken over Myspace's membership. Social media developed how they see the world and interact with their surroundings (The Maxine Platzer Lynn Women's Center at UVA, 2012).
The universality of online networking stages has given individuals the chance to be more transparent than any other time in recent memory. Some have chosen to utilize this further, bolstering their good fortune to communicate their characters further. Any semblance of Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat has given individuals the ability to indicate precisely how they need to depict. These days, on the off chance that people need to look at individuals before arranging that initial date, people would presumably look at their Facebook or Instagram pages to get a smart thought of what they are similar to (Maidment, A. 2015).
Developing writing tends to concentrate just on particular periods of informal communication, for example, social issues, instead of tending to nearly the range of web-based social networking in the instructive field. Most examinations research the connection between online networking utilization and scholarly execution (Kirschner and Karpinski 2010; Chen and Bryer, 2012). Greenhow (2011) researched how social administrations shape the instructive range, endeavoring to comprehend whether clients esteem these locales for scholastic uses or non-scholarly employments (Nisiforou & Laghos, JAH, 2015).
The researcher-filmmaker was inspired to create a narrative film about her personal experience in high school as a social media user scammed by love. She also wants to show the viewers to be aware and to understand why lesbians create fake identities in social media.
The researcher-filmmaker will use lesbianism as a topic for her thesis. Although there are films about lesbians, international and local, she observes no film about a lesbian's fake identity in social media. Drama is the chosen genre of the researcher-filmmaker because most other people do not take it seriously, or people more often talk about it. She wanted to do this film because it was very personal to her. There are reasons why people create fake identities online; some seek love or attention because sometimes people cannot help to feel lonely, so people find someone who can talk to them. The researcher-filmmaker also hopes to inform individuals who have been victims of false identities that it is not always a dangerous intent.
From the information and discoveries of this study, the researcher-filmmaker demand to answer the following:
Why do lesbians fake their identity in social media?
1. What are the reasons that a lesbian takes on a fake male identity on Facebook?
2. How can people be affected by fake identities?
3. How can a film present a fake identity through the drama genre?
With this problem, the researcher-filmmaker aims to portray the perplexing idea of lesbianism and fake identity in social media and understand how it has developed.
Specifically, this study also aims:
- To examine fake identity in social media.
- To gather data on lesbians using fake identities on social media.
- To create a full-length script in the drama genre on fake identity.
- To make a story that sympathizes with the main character.
The researcher-filmmaker shall gather more information about lesbianism and fake identity in social media to answer these questions. The information shall have gathered using two methods, which are the Interview and narrative analysis.
The research-filmmaker thought that LGBT rights now do not fully accept. The researcher-filmmaker aims to implement LGBT rights to people to understand it. The study gives importance to lesbians, and it shall give an idea of what lesbianism is and how people fake their identity in social media. It will be the researcher-filmmakers contributing to the people who create a fake identity to understand why they are hiding their identity in social media and the victims of fake identity.
The researcher-filmmaker also recognizes there are many films about lesbianism, but there are few films about in social media, but there is no lesbianism involved. There are surveys and articles on how many fake identities people have created.
According to Bruce Drake, the Supreme Court's study revealed that one of the lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender adults, as well as another American public, all had one thread in common: they became more accepting of gays and lesbians in society. Compared to the last decade, 92% of the LGBT society is now accepting; some reports are continued discrimination (Drake, B. 2017).
This research shows the side of the LGBT community and also how society sees them. It is also about the different perspectives of LGBT adults, and the results of the research show that American society is more accepting than in the past years. However, it can avoid totally against LGBT people, especially Christians who say that LGBT people are wrong, which is not valid. The outside appearance is not essential; what is essential is a person's contribution to the community.
In recent years, government and school administrators in the Philippines have recognized that harassing LGBT adolescents is a serious problem and have put together mediations to address the issue. In 2012, the Department of Education (DepEd), which oversees both compulsory and voluntary schools, implemented a Kid Insurance Approach to combat harassment and segregation in schools, mainly based on the sexual introduction and sex character (Human Rights Watch, 2017). Schools should be safe havens for students of all backgrounds. In any event, students who identify as LGBT in the Philippines frequently report that their tutoring experiences damage by taunting, segregation, lack of access to LGBT-related info, and, in some cases, physical or sexual rape.
Since the researcher-filmmaker's output will be all about lesbianism here in the Philippines, it shows people's information about how they see the LGBT community. It aims to be more specific in telling a story and to present more facts about lesbianism. In school, many cases are happening, like discrimination.
People worldwide face violence and inequality and sometimes torture, even execution, because of whom who they are or what they adore about themselves. Gender identity and sexual orientation are fundamental parts of who we are as people. They should never be the cause of violence or discrimination. Gay, bisexual, and transgender rights are a priority for Human Rights Watch. With activists representing various identities and issues. Document and expose Sexual orientation and gender identity used as a basis for a wide range of systematic abuse worldwide, from torture and execution to unjust laws that lead to unequal treatment and censorship. Other abuses include discrimination in the workplace and housing, as well as discrimination in health care. They work to pass legislation and implement policies that ensure the dignity of all people. Also, they work for a world where all people can enjoy their rights fully. (Reuters, 2013)
In the workplace, schools, and hospitals, they face discrimination. Their relatives also abuse and abandon them. They are picked out and subjected to physical and sexual abuse and other forms of torture and death. Transgender people expose to criminal penalties in several countries because of their gender identity and expression, prohibited by law. Seventy-seven countries with discriminatory laws prohibit private, consenting same-sex partnerships, placing persons in fear of being arrested, prosecuted, or even imprisoned. According to the most recent available data, five of those countries utilize the death penalty (High Commissioner for Human Rights, n.d.)
Most people know that every person has a human right. As a human being that belongs to LGBT community, they have a right to have a human right for each one. It is hard to be happy if the people around them cannot accept the personality they are.
