This study aims to assess the effects of the Urban Productive Safety Net Program (UPSNP) in Addis Ababa, specifically within the Kolfe Keranio Sub-City, on the livelihoods of households who have graduated from the program. It examines the socio-economic changes experienced by these households before and after participating in the UPSNP, and it investigates the challenges they faced in establishing sustainable income-generating activities (IGAs).
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION: This chapter introduces the study, providing background information on social safety nets (SSNs) globally and in Ethiopia, highlighting the evolution of such programs and their aims. It then establishes the research problem by discussing the prevalence of poverty and food insecurity in Addis Ababa, particularly in Kolfe Keranio Sub-City. The chapter outlines the study's objectives, research questions, significance, scope, limitations, operational definitions, and ethical considerations, setting the stage for the subsequent analysis of the UPSNP's impact.
CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW: This chapter reviews existing literature on social protection systems, definitions of social protection, formal and informal systems, and relevant theoretical frameworks such as the basic needs approach, the empowerment approach, and the sustainable livelihoods framework (SLF). It also examines empirical evidence on the effects of similar safety net programs, both in Ethiopia and elsewhere, providing a theoretical context for understanding the UPSNP and its potential impact.
CHAPTER THREE: METHODOLOGY: This chapter details the research methodology employed, including the research design (mixed methods, descriptive and explanatory), the study area (Kolfe Keranio Sub-City, Addis Ababa), the target population (UPSNP graduate-households), data collection methods (questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions, observations), and data analysis techniques (both quantitative and qualitative). The chapter justifies the choice of stratified random sampling and explains the sample size determination process.
CHAPTER FOUR: RESULT AND DISCUSSION: This chapter presents the findings of the study, analyzing the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents and examining the changes in their socioeconomic status before and after participating in the UPSNP. It explores the challenges faced by graduate households in achieving sustainable IGAs, the opportunities provided by the program, and community attitudes towards the program and its graduates. This chapter synthesizes both quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive picture of the UPSNP's impact.

This study assesses the impact of the Urban Productive Safety Net Program (UPSNP) in Addis Ababa's Kolfe Keranio Sub-City on the livelihoods of households that have graduated from the program. It examines socio-economic changes before and after participation, and investigates challenges in establishing sustainable income-generating activities (IGAs).
The study aims to determine the socio-economic impact of the UPSNP on graduate households, identify challenges faced in establishing sustainable IGAs, explore opportunities created by UPSNP participation, understand community attitudes towards the program and its graduates, and analyze the role of asset building and savings in achieving program goals.
The study comprises four chapters: Chapter One (Introduction), Chapter Two (Literature Review), Chapter Three (Methodology), and Chapter Four (Results and Discussion). Chapter One introduces the study and establishes its objectives. Chapter Two reviews existing literature on social protection systems and relevant theoretical frameworks. Chapter Three details the research methodology, including the research design, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques. Chapter Four presents the findings of the study, analyzing the socio-economic changes experienced by graduate households and exploring challenges and opportunities related to the program.
The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions, and observations. Stratified random sampling was used, and both quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques were applied.
Key themes include the socio-economic impact of the UPSNP, challenges in establishing sustainable IGAs, opportunities created by the program, community attitudes towards the program and its graduates, the role of asset building and savings, and the program's overall effectiveness in improving livelihoods.
Chapter Four presents detailed findings, but in summary, the study analyzes the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents, examines changes in their socio-economic status before and after UPSNP participation, explores challenges faced by graduate households in achieving sustainable IGAs, and investigates community perceptions of the program's impact. Both quantitative and qualitative data are synthesized to provide a comprehensive picture.
Keywords include UPSNP, IGA's, Asset building, Food insecurity, Food Access, Profit, saving, challenges, Attitudes, Addis Ababa, Kolfe Keranio, Ethiopia, Social Safety Nets, Poverty, and Livelihoods.
This study contributes to a better understanding of the effectiveness of the UPSNP in Addis Ababa, providing valuable insights for policymakers and program implementers. The findings can inform future program design and implementation, leading to more effective poverty reduction strategies.
Chapter Three provides a comprehensive description of the research methodology, including the research design, sampling techniques, data collection methods, and data analysis procedures.
The study's limitations are outlined in Chapter One. These may include geographical limitations (focus on Kolfe Keranio Sub-City), sample size constraints, and potential biases in data collection or interpretation.
