This research evaluates the current status and the professional challenges faced by women police constables operating within the Maharashtra state police force.
The study covers personal and demographic factors, domestic responsibilities, the impact of professional duties on marital and family life, and specific workplace conditions like health, promotion biases, and infrastructure.
The research is driven by the goal to understand the status of women in the police force, identify the problems they face, and analyze institutional and social barriers that impact their professional role.
The author uses a descriptive research design, utilizing structured interview schedules for a sample size of 360 women police constables selected through a purposive sampling method across 18 districts of Maharashtra.
The main body examines historical perspectives, the comparative status of women police between different regions, role conflict, impact on child nurture, stress levels, and evaluations of seniors’ and colleagues’ behavior.
Key terms include Women Police, Role Conflict, Domestic Violence, Police Working Conditions, Job Satisfaction, and Gender Discrimination.
The research addresses role conflict as the struggle of balancing the rigid, time-intensive requirements of police duty with traditional domestic duties, often causing psychological tension and family strain for married respondents.
The study highlights a shifting landscape where a significant majority of women receive family support to join the force, yet deeper conflicts remain regarding domestic decision-making power and the unequal division of house-work load.
The findings indicate that while official equality exists, women frequently deal with subtle discrimination, such as being restricted to specific types of duties (e.g., office/women-cell work) rather than rigorous field or riot-control operations.
