The primary aim of this research is to investigate the prevalence, root causes, and impacts of student dropout in primary schools within the Moyale District of the Borana Zone, Oromia. The study focuses not only on determining current dropout rates but also on analyzing the complex interplay of factors contributing to student withdrawal, including family, school, and external societal influences, to provide actionable recommendations for educational stakeholders.
1.1.Background of the study
Education equips people with capacities to make informed choices about their lives and a positive contribution to the society. It is a basis for guaranteeing the realization of other rights provides an exit out of poverty and reinforces social cohesion and integration (UNESCO, 2017). In 1948, education was agreed by the United Nations to be a fundamental human right (UN, 1948). This global need provides a continuing commitment to review past progress and future prospects in making this right a reality for everyone.
According to UNESCO (2017, p.18). Education for Sustainable Development Goals, goal 4 “Quality Education” asserts “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”
Primary education is assumed to be the basic tool for welfare of the nations through improvement of productivity and reduction of poverty (Colclough & Levin, 1993; Kadzamira & Rose, 2003), conservation of environmental sanitation and assurance of family health (Lockheed & Verspoor, 1991) as well as strengthening good governance and participation in the community. Thus, primary education started to be seen not only as part and parcel of major human rights but also as one of the leading political and social agendas of many countries (UNICEF, 2007).

The research fundamentally investigates the prevalence and causes of student dropout in primary schools within the Moyale District, located in the Borana Zone of Oromia, Ethiopia.
The study examines three main thematic fields: the trend and existence of dropout rates, the family-related, school-related, and external factors causing these dropouts, and the resulting impacts on individuals, society, and the nation at large.
The main objective is to identify the root causes interfering with student persistence and to analyze the prevalence of dropout, ultimately aiming to propose solutions to minimize or eliminate this educational wastage.
The author employs a mixed research method using a concurrent triangulation design, gathering both primary and secondary data through surveys, in-depth interviews, document analysis, and focus group discussions.

Conflict and ethnic war result in the displacement of communities and the closing or destruction of school facilities. This instability creates a hostile environment that prevents students from remaining in school and disrupts their educational progress.
