The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the impact of music on church development and growth, utilizing the Highfield Church of Christ (HCOC) as a specific case study. The study aims to uncover how effective music utilization—or the lack thereof—affects congregational maturity, spiritual connection, and numerical growth, while establishing strategies to enhance music ministry.
2.3.1 Music in the Old Testament
In the opening chapters of Genesis, we encounter the mention of music and those referred to as the inventors of it (Gen. 4:21). Jewish tradition has given expression to the fact that music belongs to the earliest benefits and gifts of the culture of mankind by establishing Jubal as the originator of music and father of musicians as early as the seventh generation after creation (Cornill, 1909). It is generally known that music occupied a greater place in the worship of ancient Israel and as thus Cornill (1909) concludes, “Everywhere and at all times were song and music to be found in ancient Israel. Every festival occasion, every climax of public or private life was celebrated with music and song.” This shows how the people of the Old Testament (OT) could not be separated from music and for them, music was their life.
Music in the OT came in two forms; the psalms and instrumental music. The Book of Psalms and the Song of Moses in Genesis 15, are proof of the kind of songs that the Israelites sang. Some scholars argue that musical instruments used in the OT were not commanded by God and when the instruments were to be used, the occasion was specific (Num. 10:10). Price (2005) argues, “As with all other elements of the Tabernacle worship, the use of musical instruments was regulated by divine command. God regulated not only the specific instruments that should be used but also the number of them, who could use them, and the occasions and purposes for which they could be used.” Musical instruments were not used at liberty in the OT. Strict commands from God had to be followed whenever instruments were to be used.
