Das erste Mal erschien der Begriff in einer Publikation von Shakespeare im Jahr 1599: „she burnt out of love, as soone as straw out burneth“ (S. 8).
„The dictionary defines the verb ‘burn-out‘ as 'to fail, wear out, or become exhausted by making excessive demands on energy, strength, or resources.' And that is exactly what happens when a staff member in an alternative institution burns out for whatever reasons and becomes incorporative to all intents and purposes” (Freudenberger, 1974, S. 159).
In „ The problem off the burned out executive “ beschreibt er Burn-out als symbolische Krankheit von Managern, die besonders erfolgreich sind.
“Burnout is formally defined and subjectively experienced as a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by long term involvement in situations that are emotionally demanding” (Pines & Aronson, 1988, S. 9).

In vereinzelten Studien waren jedoch Zusammenhänge erkennbar.
