This study examines the key concepts of livelihood diversification, non-farm activities, on-farm diversification, household income, and poverty in the context of rural Ethiopia. It investigates the prevalence, factors influencing, and impact of these strategies in a specific geographic region, drawing on empirical data and providing valuable insights into rural development policies and strategies.
Livelihood diversification refers to the process by which households construct a diverse portfolio of activities and social support capabilities in order to survive and improve their standard of living.
Since Ethiopia's economy relies heavily on rain-fed agriculture, farmers are vulnerable to droughts. Diversification into non-farm activities provides a crucial alternative income source.
On-farm diversification involves expanding agricultural activities (e.g., new crops or livestock), while non-farm diversification involves activities outside of traditional farming, such as trade or services.
Studies indicate that households with diversified income sources generally have higher total incomes and are more resilient against economic shocks, which helps in reducing poverty.
Decisions are influenced by socio-economic characteristics such as education level, household size, access to credit, market proximity, and environmental factors like climate change.
The study surveyed 140 households in the Adami Tulu Jido Kombolicha Woreda to analyze their specific diversification strategies and their impact on household welfare.
