This study aims to examine the role of church pastors of the Nigerian Baptist Convention in utilizing social media for peacebuilding and conflict resolution, specifically in the context of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 (peaceful and inclusive societies).
1.1. Background to the Study
There is no way to discuss a peaceful and non-violent society without discussing conflicts and how to resolve them. There are many conflicts in the world: conflicts within oneself, interpersonal conflicts, marital conflicts, conflicts in churches, and between churches, conflicts within a nation, and above all, international conflicts. Conflicts are indeed part of everyday life. People have to resolve these conflicts, and one has to build peace in the person that has the conflicts within or people involved in interpersonal conflicts so that there will be a peaceful and non-violent society.
On the other hand, peacebuilding is fundamentally about the procedure of achieving peace1. Nevertheless, peace building varies considerably in relation to methods, scope of undertakings, and time frame depending on how one understands the concept of peace2. So, to resolve or transform conflict, it is essential to comprehend and address the emotional states, matters, and relationships as well as the conduct of people involved in the conflict3. Since ancient times, there have been many mediators and conciliators that have strived to win over and soothe the hostility and anger of disputing parties4.
There may be no shortcut or simple prescription for healing the wounds and divisions of people in the aftermath of sustained violence or conflict5. Nonetheless, conflicts must be resolved, and people must take deliberate active roles in resolving these conflicts and promoting peacebuilding and sustainability.
Based on Pauline injunction that “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation,” every Christian is mandated to make the process of reconciliation work in or after any conflict6.

The core objective is to critically evaluate how church pastors within the Nigerian Baptist Convention utilize social media platforms in mediative dialogue to resolve conflicts and promote peaceful societies, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 16.
The study primarily focuses on "mediative dialogue," as well as pastoral counseling, preaching, and the application of theological principles to reconcile disputing members.
As a faith-based organization, the church is viewed as a vital stakeholder in promoting peaceful coexistence through its ministry, reconciliation efforts, and social programs that contribute directly to Goal 16 of the UN SDGs.
It utilizes qualitative methods, including sample surveys and semi-structured interviews with pastors in the Ibadan metropolis, to gauge their digital competence and practical use of platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram in managing conflicts.
Key challenges include erratic electricity supply, poor internet connectivity, privacy concerns (such as the risk of leaks or cyber-harassment), and limited digital literacy among some clergy members.
The author suggests a viable framework that integrates the Transformative Theory of conflict and the Public Sphere Theory, recommending that pastors should consciously deploy social media as an instrumental tool for deepening peace.
The Bible is identified as the primary resource for these pastors, with specific references to teachings on forgiveness, reconciliation, and the example of Jesus Christ as the supreme mediator, guiding their interpersonal and counseling approaches.
The research is geographically focused on Baptist pastors within the Ibadan metropolis, serving as a case study that provides local insights into the wider practices of the Nigerian Baptist Convention.
