This dissertation investigates the influence of Pentecostal Christian leaders on political participation in Mbale City, Uganda, focusing on the theological and sociocultural underpinnings that guide these leaders and their congregants within the regional political landscape.
Biblical principles that inform the Pentecostal Christian leaders on political participation
The word politics is not found in the Bible; nevertheless, the concept of politics is directly and indirectly addressed in several parts of the Bible. In the Old Testament, God raised up leaders such as Moses, Joshua, and David to guide and govern the people of Israel. These leaders were called to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8). The prophets also spoke out against injustice and corruption in the political sphere, calling leaders to repentance and urging them to care for the poor and marginalized. Pentecostal leaders view political participation as a way to help create a society that is more just and compassionate, where the needs of the poor and marginalized are met, and where the values of the gospel are reflected in public policy. They believe that Christians have a duty to be involved in the political process and to use their influence to bring about positive change.
In the New Testament, Jesus himself engaged in political action by challenging the oppressive structures of his time and advocating for the dignity and rights of all people. He also taught his followers to love their neighbors as themselves and to care for the poor and marginalized (Matthew 25:31-46).
The apostles likewise urged Christians to engage in political participation and to pray for those in positions of authority: "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings, and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:1-4, NIV). This passage is a call to prayer for all people, especially for those in positions of authority, such as kings and rulers. The passage emphasizes the importance of living peaceful and quiet lives, and doing so in a manner that is in line with the principles of godliness and holiness.

The research examines the influence exerted by Pentecostal Christian leaders on the political participation of their congregants and the wider community in Mbale City, Uganda.
Central topics include the biblical and theological justifications for political engagement, the impact of pastoral guidance on voting behavior, and the sociopolitical challenges religious leaders face.
The study aims to analyze how theological perspectives shape Pentecostal engagement and to provide actionable recommendations for more responsible, inclusive political participation.
The researcher uses a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data from 75 participants with qualitative in-depth interviews involving 10 Pentecostal bishops and overseers.
Findings cover demographic trends among congregants, the prevalence of conservative political views, strategies for promoting civic duty, and the challenges of balancing faith with institutional politics.
Key terms include Pentecostalism, political participation, Christian leadership, biblical principles, civic responsibility, and sociocultural integration.
Many Pentecostal leaders interpret the Great Commission as a mandate not only for evangelism but also for extending faith-based values into the public sphere through political involvement.
Leaders face financial constraints, external opposition from other religious groups, political polarization, and the difficulty of maintaining political neutrality during heated elections.
Specific recommendations include providing political skills training for leaders, fostering interfaith dialogue, encouraging grassroots voter mobilization, and prioritizing social justice initiatives.
