The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the challenges and opportunities associated with the adoption and implementation of agent banking services within the Ethiopian banking sector, specifically focusing on Awash Bank. By utilizing a descriptive research design and a mixed-methods approach, the study seeks to answer key questions regarding current banking practices, potential growth benefits, and operational/technological obstacles faced by banks, agents, and customers.
2.7. Challenges of Agent Banking
There are a number of challenges that banks, the agents as well as the customers face when they engage in agent banking. Some of the challenges are related to either in routine operational activities or technology.
2.7.1. Operational Challenges of Agent Banking
2.7.1.1. Training
The utilization of agents for the distribution of financial services is increasingly becoming popular among financial institutions. However, it is imperative that these agents receive adequate training to successfully execute their mandate. George, Narain, and Shukla (2012) report that the majority of agents were not trained and the agent network managers also received suggestion frequently as they had to revert to the operational facilitators to carry out monitoring. George et al. (2012) further assert that training programs often fail to meet expectations due to the fact that the training needs for agent categories are distinct, and thus require specific approaches. In a bid to demystify the training needs of agents, George et al. (2012)
It was proofed by the Micro Save (2011) on mobile banking agents in Bihar, India, with six categories of awareness level checking of agents and the study revealed a huge gap in the awareness levels of agents in Technology. Among the agents participated in the study 64% of the agents have understood the objective of electronic/mobile-banking services appreciated by banks, 68% were do not have any knowledge. Similarly, 61% of the agents knew about products and processes, but only 24% could respond queries from clients.
CHAPTER ONE: Introduction: Discusses the background of the study and the organizational context of Awash Bank, while identifying the problem statement, objectives, and research questions regarding agent banking in Ethiopia.
CHAPTER TWO: 2. LITERATURE REVIEW: Examines theoretical perspectives like Agency Theory and explores existing literature on agent banking models, evolution, regulatory directives, and categorized challenges and opportunities.
CHAPTER THREE: CHAPTER THREE: Details the research methodology, including the descriptive design, mixed-method approach, population sampling techniques, and data collection procedures used to conduct the study.
CHAPTER FOUR: CHAPTER FOUR: Presents the analysis and interpretation of empirical data gathered from questionnaires and interviews, focusing on demographic profiles and specific findings on policies, challenges, and opportunities.

The study focuses on assessing the challenges and opportunities associated with the adoption of agent banking services within the Ethiopian banking industry, specifically examining selected branches of Awash Bank.
The core themes include technological challenges (system malfunction, security), operational hurdles (training, liquidity management), and the strategic opportunities provided by agent banking (financial inclusion, cost efficiency, market expansion).
The general objective is to analyze the opportunities and challenges of agent banking in the Ethiopian banking sector and to identify the practices that impact its adoption and future growth.
The research employed a mixed-methods approach using questionnaires administered to 53 bank staff members and 12 agents, supplemented by interviews and secondary sources like bank reports and publications.
The main body covers a comprehensive review of literature on agency theory and banking models, a detailed methodology section, and a presentation of empirical findings regarding agent banking policies, risks, and benefits.
Key terms include agent banking, Ethiopia, financial inclusion, Awash Bank, operational challenges, and technological adoption.
The study points out significant issues such as a lack of professional training among staff, liquidity shortages in physical outlets, and reliance on network providers which leads to system downtime and interference with service delivery.
The author recommends enhancing capacity-building and training programs for agents, establishing a dedicated support team to solve agent queries, and revising commission structures to better incentivize agents and improve liquidity in agent outlets.
