Freelancer ziehen wie moderne Arbeitsnomaden von einem Auftraggeber zum nächsten. Berechtigterweise kommt im Hinblick darauf die Frage auf, ob solche Menschen überhaupt emotional gebunden werden können. Wem gegenüber fühlen sie sich verpflichtet?
Vor dem Hintergrund eines zunehmend dynamischen Wettbewerbs ist seit Jahren eine weitreichende Flexibilisierung zu erkennen, die sich in tiefgreifenden Veränderungen der Personalstruktur vieler Unternehmen bemerkbar macht. Eine kontinuierliche Abkehr von Normalarbeitsverhältnissen kann in diesem Zusammenhang beobachtet werden. An die Stelle festangestellter Mitarbeiter treten immer häufiger Mitarbeiter mit Kurzzeitverträgen, Leiharbeiter und Freelancer. Diese Entwicklung zieht sich über alle Branchen und Industrien hinweg. Arbeitgeber profitieren einerseits von diesem vielfältigen Angebot an flexibel einsetzbaren Arbeitskräften und externem Fachwissen. Andererseits stehen Führungskräfte vor der Herausforderung, diese "alternativen Belegschaft" zu führen, die sich in vielerlei Hinsicht vom klassischen Arbeitnehmer unterscheidet. Im Zentrum der Betrachtungen dieser Arbeit steht das Phänomen Freelancer, in der Literatur auch betitelt als freie Mitarbeiter und Soloselbstständige.
Die Arbeitswelt befindet sich in stetigem Wandel. Noch Mitte der 80er Jahre war der Arbeitnehmer in der Wahrnehmung der Arbeitgeber eine lediglich ökonomisch interessante Größe. Mittlerweile hat er sich in der Wahrnehmung der Unternehmen zu einer für den Erfolg des Unternehmens wichtigen Voraussetzung entwickelt. Damit diese Ressource Personal effizient eingesetzt und ihr Potential voll ausgeschöpft werden kann, bedarf es jedoch der richtigen Führung. Sie kann das Verhalten der Mitarbeiter in verschiedene Richtungen mit jeweils unterschiedlichen Konsequenzen lenken. Folglich kommt ihr damit eine essenziell wichtige Rolle zur Erreichung der Unternehmensziele zu.
Schlechte oder fehlerhafte Führung führt zu einer schlechten Mitarbeiterbindung, die sich unmittelbar auf wichtige Wettbewerbsfaktoren wie Arbeitsqualität, Produktivität und Fehlzeiten der Mitarbeiter auswirkt. Wer sich dem Unternehmen gegenüber nur oberflächlich oder gar nicht verantwortlich fühlt, reißt sich für seinen Arbeitgeber in der Regel nicht das sprichwörtliche Bein aus. Hinzu kommt eine potentiell hohe Fluktuation bei einer gering an das Unternehmen gebundenen Belegschaft.
