5.7 Summary of the Study
This study aims to investigate the factors influencing the reading culture among senior secondary school students in the Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, specifically focusing on identifying why reading performance is declining and the barriers students face in developing effective reading habits.
1.1 Background of the Study
Reading is one of the four major language skills. Language is one of the most significant features of human kid. There is nothing human beings can do without the function of one form of language or the other. That is why the great linguist Saussure says that in lives of individuals and societies, language is a factor of greater importance than any other. The acquisition of language is unique to human being. Although, other species can communicate in their own way, only humans have attained the most highly developed system of communication, the use of words or expressions.
These definitions show that language is essentially vocal and non-vocal, and is used for communication. It includes any and every means available to humans for communication. In this sense, language is not an end to itself but a means to an ends mainly that of fulfilling the communication needs of man. Therefore, we subscribe that any means that is conventionally meaning-laden, available to man and used by him to convey his thoughts and notions, as well as help him understand his fellow men ad his world, is language. Language experiences are the foundation for reading.
National Policy on Education (2004) recognizes the significance of reading in the education of an individual and states it as one of its objectives for primary schools. Obviously, command of this language is necessary at both national and international levels. So, it has to be taught and learnt from elementary level. The English Language for instance is one of the legacies bequeathed by the British. This is as a result of its role as medium of communication and instructions in all spheres of human endeavors such as in commerce and industry, politics and government, the mass media and so on.
1.0 INTRODUCTION: Provides the background and rationale for examining the reading culture of secondary students, defining the study's scope and key research questions.
2.0 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE: Explores theoretical frameworks, including Operant Conditioning and Social Learning Theory, alongside previous empirical studies regarding factors that hinder reading development.
3.0 RESEARCH METHOD: Details the descriptive survey research design, population sample selection, and the administration of the "Factors Affecting Reading Culture" (FARC) questionnaire.
4.0 Results: Presents the statistical analysis of data collected from students, confirming how parental background, environment, and teaching methods impact reading habits.
5.0. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS, CONCLUSIONS, EDUCATIONAL: Interprets the research findings, offers final conclusions, and suggests practical recommendations for stakeholders and future research directions.

The research focuses on identifying and analyzing the factors that negatively impact the reading culture of senior secondary school students in the Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.
The central themes include the educational background of parents, the accessibility and use of instructional materials, the quality of the learning environment, and the efficacy of various pedagogical methods used by teachers.
The study aims to determine the extent to which parental education, instructional resources, learning atmosphere, and teacher methods affect students' ability and interest in reading.
A descriptive survey research design was used, involving 200 students selected from ten secondary schools, with data collected via a questionnaire and analyzed using mean and standard deviation.
The main body covers a comprehensive literature review of learning theories relevant to reading, a detailed methodology chapter, result presentations via tables, and a discussion of implications for educators and policy makers.
Key terms include Reading Culture, Secondary Education, Instructional Materials, Student Achievement, and Effective Teaching Methods.
Findings suggest that illiteracy, socio-economic factors such as poverty, and a lack of early grounding at home significantly correlate with poor reading performance and low motivation.
The research concludes that non-conducive environments—such as noisy classrooms, overcrowded spaces, and inadequate infrastructure—severely hinder a student's ability to engage with reading materials effectively.
