The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of current waste disposal practices and identify necessary policy, institutional, and technological improvements to achieve a more sustainable environmental management framework.
THE PRACTICE OF WASTE MANAGEMENT IN MACAU
Waste management in Macau is the process of collection, storage, transportation and incineration of the wastes generated by the the teritory. The companies CSR and CGS are responsible for different aspects of waste management in Macau. While CSR is responsible for street cleaning, garbage collection and transportation, CGS caters for the operation of the garbage incinerator.
Since the objective of this paper is draw policy conclusions, chemical characterization of toxic substances discharged as a result of incineration is not within the scope of this research. The major challenge that has been raised in the operation of the MIRP is the generation of fly ash and slag considered harmful to public health and environmental quality.

The work focuses on identifying the underlying barriers that prevent effective solid waste management in Macau SAR, taking into account the unique economic and social conditions of the region.
The core themes include the impact of the tourism-driven economy, the effectiveness of current government regulations, the role of public attitude, and the technological challenges associated with waste disposal.
The goal is to provide a sound basis for policy development by analyzing current waste management practices and proposing improvements that align with sustainable environmental standards.
The author employed a qualitative research approach, utilizing content analysis alongside empirical data collected through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires with stakeholders and the public.
The main body examines the evolution of waste production, the operational processes of existing waste management firms, and the regulatory challenges within the context of the PEST framework.
The work is best characterized by terms such as Solid Waste Management, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Development, and Institutional Enforcement.
The gaming industry is the primary driver of Macau's economic growth and population influx, which directly correlates to the increasing volumes of solid waste discussed in the research.
Technology is viewed as the industry's backbone; however, the author highlights significant constraints such as land scarcity and the environmental costs associated with the reliance on incineration.
The author recommends strengthening institutional enforcement, updating ambiguous environmental laws, and integrating sustainability science into the educational curriculum to shift public mentality.
