In der folgenden Arbeit soll es darum gehen, wann genau Sprecherwechsel in einer Konversation stattfindet, welche Unterschiede es zwischen Sprecherwechsel während und Sprecherwechsel nach einer Äußerung gibt und inwiefern welche Faktoren den Sprecherwechsel beeinflussen können.
Das in der pragmatischen Forschung beobachtete Phänomen „Turn Taking“ bezeichnet den organisierten Sprecherwechsel in einer Konversation oder ähnlichen Sprachaustausch-Situationen. Die sogenannten Turns beschreiben den Gesprächsbeitrag einer Person; sie haben keine feste Größe, sind aber in der Regel etwa zwei Sekunden lang und somit recht kurz, können aber auch länger sein, beispielsweise beim Erzählen einer Geschichte. Bei dem Sprecherwechsel gibt es zwei vorrangige, einander gegenüberstehende Hypothesen: die universelle System-Hypothese und die Hypothese der kulturellen Variabilität. Die erste behauptet, dass es sich beim Turn Taking um ein universelles System handle, wohingegen die zweite von kulturbedingten Unterschieden bezüglich beispielsweise Überlappungen oder Pausen im Gespräch ausgeht. Stivers führte im Jahr 2009 gemeinsam mit ihren Kolleg*innen einen Versuch durch, bei welchem sie Konversationen in zehn sehr unterschiedlichen und aus verschiedenen Kulturen und Kontinenten stammenden Sprachen untersuchten. Sie betrachteten Konversationen bestehend aus geschlossenen Fragen, da diese einfach zu beantworten seien und in jeder der zehn Sprachen gestellt und auf vergleichbare Weise beantwortet werden können. Es wurden einige kulturelle Unterschiede in der Antwortgeschwindigkeit gefunden, was einerseits darauf zurückzuführen sein könnte, dass einige Sprachen Frageindikatoren am Anfang und einige am Ende des Satzes haben und andererseits an der generellen kulturellen Interaktionsgeschwindigkeit liegen könnte. Da sich jedoch herausstellte, dass die Faktoren, die die Antwortgeschwindigkeit beeinflussen, in allen betrachteten Sprachen identisch sind, spricht der durchgeführte Versuch dennoch für die universelle System-Hypothese.
