Bestimmt unsere Sprache unsere Art, in der wir denken und unsere Welt sehen? Was genau ist dran am sprachlichen Relativitätsprinzip, welches bekannt als die Sapir-Whorf-Hypothese Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts erstmalig für Unruhe gesorgt hat. Verschiedene Sprachen bringen verschiedene Funktionsweisen, verschiedene Grammatiken, mit sich, die wir wie selbstverständlich erlernen und zumeist gar unhinterfragt anwenden. Solch Unterschiedene können beispielsweise die Rolle des Subjekts im Satz betreffen, die explizite Kennzeichnung von Geschlechtszugehörigkeit oder die Beschreibungsweisen transzendenter Weltaneignung, wie die deiktischen Kennzeichnungen 'links' und 'rechts' oder morphosyntaktische Betrachtungsweisen auf die eigene Person: ich, mich, mir. Viele Sprache haben ihre Besonderheiten, die sie von anderen Sprachen unterscheiden, wodurch es oft eine schwierige Aufgabe ist, sie ineinander zu übersetzen. Einige Sprachen bestehen aus einem gigantischen Wortschatz und komplexen grammatikalischen Strukturen, andere sind scheinbar viel simpler aufgebaut. Können sie aber das gleiche aussagen, und viel wichtiger: erfassen sie beiden den epistemologischen Sinn der Welt in gleichem Maße oder erscheint uns die Welt auf eine andere Art und Weise, je nachdem wie wir gelernt haben, über unsere Welt zu sprechen?
Denn das ist der Kern der Sapir-Whorf-Hypothese: wir denken in den Strukturen und Kategorien, die uns unsere (Erst)sprache vorgibt. Verschiedene Sprecher besitzen kulturell divergierende Fertigkeiten, die Welt d.h. den stream of consciousness zu dekodieren. Diese Arbeit zeigt die Entstehungsgeschichte dieser Forschungsarbeit, indem sie sich engmaschig insbesondere an die Originalschrift von Benjamin Whorf hält und nicht nur einzelne Zitate verwendet, welche in Vergangenheit oft zu wörtlich genommen und falsch verstanden wurden. Später schließt sie ein Resumée in Kontext zum heutigen Forschungsstand der kommunikativen Wirklichkeit. Muss ich tatsächliche alle Sprachen der Welt sprechen und gegeneinander abwiegen, um die Einsicht in eine objektive Wirklichkeit zu erhalten?
