The primary objective of this paper is to examine the multifaceted role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) within international companies. It investigates how ICT acts as an alternative resource-use system to influence corporate strategies, transform organizational structures, enhance long-term productivity, and mitigate negative environmental impacts.
The impact of ICT in international Companies’ strategies
This section will mainly focus on ICTs enabling change through new opportunities associated with global strategies, transnational strategies or local strategies. And finally what ICs should take into account when implementing the alternative resource use systems
Companies operating globally face pressures for global strategy which means trying to minimize its unit costs (standardization) (Hill, 2007). On the other hand, localisation strategy means to be locally responsive, which is to differentiate products and marketing strategies to national preferences (customisation or differentiation) (Hill, 2007). However in today’s competitive environment ICs have to lower prices (tend to use global strategy), and to respond to local wants and preferences at the same time (tend to use local strategy) which basically means to follow the so called transantional strategy (developed in the between of the two above strategies) (Daniels, 2007). The ICT gives the opportunity to the International Companies to either enhance the differentiation (localisation strategy), to lower costs (global strategy) (Poulymenakou at al, 2002), or to stay in between (transantional strategy).
Introduction: This chapter highlights the transformation of the business environment due to competition and technological innovation, emphasizing the necessity for companies to align their strategies and structures with ICT developments.
Types of Information and Communication Technologies and its impact on management: This section details various ICT systems like DAA, ERP, and PSI, illustrating how they support decision-making and integrate value chain activities.
The impact of ICT in international Companies’ strategies: This chapter discusses how ICT facilitates different strategic approaches, ranging from cost-standardization in global markets to product differentiation in local ones.
The impact of ICT in international Companies’ organisational structures: This part analyzes how ICT supports both mechanistic and organic organizational forms, influencing centralization, decentralization, and the flattening of hierarchies.
How does ICT ‘reduce’ negative environmental impacts?: This chapter explores the dual nature of ICT regarding the environment, identifying potential benefits like reduced travel via telecommuting versus the rebound effect of increased consumption.
Conclusion: This final section synthesizes the findings, noting that while ICT offers significant productivity and efficiency gains, its successful implementation requires careful management of cultural, human, and structural factors.

The paper explores the impact of ICT on the strategies, organizational structures, productivity, and environmental performance of international companies.
The central themes include the integration of ICT into business operations, the transition between mechanistic and organic organizational structures, and the environmental implications of adopting digital technologies.
The objective is to elaborate on how companies can enhance long-term productivity by effectively integrating alternative resource-use systems like ICT while remaining environmentally conscious.
The paper utilizes a literature-based analytical approach, synthesizing existing academic research and management theories to explain the relationships between ICT adoption and corporate performance.
The main body covers the definition of ICT tools, their role in facilitating various business strategies, their influence on management hierarchies, and a critical look at their environmental impact.
Key terms include information efficiencies, information synergies, organizational memory, transnational strategy, and the rebound effect.
ICT supports change by providing integrated platforms that allow for "controlled decentralization," enabling employees to share information and collaborate across functional boundaries.
No, the author notes that ICT investment is not a "magic bullet," as success depends on aligning technology with human factors, leadership, and existing organizational culture.
The rebound effect describes a situation where the efficiency gains from ICT (like telecommuting) lead to other behaviors (like increased shopping trips) that ultimately consume more energy.
The paper discusses the view that ICT might reduce the need for middle management by improving top-down communication, while also noting the counter-argument that ICT should be used to leverage rather than replace middle-level professionals.
