This master's thesis aims to develop a holistic model for achieving process capability level 3 and higher in the automotive industry by integrating Automotive SPICE standards with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), lean thinking principles, and the 5 Whys technique. The core research focus is on providing a structured approach for practitioners to define, measure, and improve development processes.
2.5 Lean Thinking
The Lean philosophy, originating in Japan in the 1950s, revolutionized manufacturing and later extended its principles to various industries beyond manufacturing, including services, and software development. At its core, Lean aims to eliminate waste, optimize processes, and maximize value for the customer (Alalawin et al., 2022). The term waste in lean thinking is defined as any activity, process, or resource that does not contribute to creating value for the customer (Virginia et al., 2015).
The lean approach encourages organizations to continually identify and distinguish between value-adding and non-value-adding activities from the customers' perspective in the processes of creating and delivering a product or service. It emphasizes the ongoing elimination of activities perceived as non-value-adding.
Principles of Lean Management
Defining value, mapping the value stream, establishing flow, applying a pull system, and pursuing perfection are the five pillars of Lean, as stated by Womack and Jones (2000).
1. Introduction: This chapter introduces the context of the automotive industry transformation, defines the problem statement regarding standard implementation, and outlines the research objectives and significance.
2. Literature Review: This section provides a comprehensive theoretical background by evaluating Automotive SPICE, CMMI, performance management frameworks, lean principles, and the 5 Whys technique.
3. Research Methodology: The methodology chapter details the mixed-methods research design, including the integrative literature review and qualitative interviews used to gather data.
4. Results and Discussion: This chapter presents the findings on the current state of Elmos' processes and introduces the proposed performance measurement model and KPI framework.
5. Conclusion: The conclusion summarizes the proposed holistic approach, the expected benefits for process maturity, study limitations, and recommendations for future research.

The thesis focuses on improving development process maturity in the automotive industry by creating a holistic framework that combines industry standards like Automotive SPICE with Lean principles and effective KPI design.
The research primarily addresses the automotive industry, specifically focusing on semiconductor and system development processes at Elmos Semiconductor SE.
The main objective is to design a methodology that assists organizations in reaching and exceeding Automotive SPICE capability level 3 through better measurement and lean management.
The study uses a mixed-methods approach, centering on an integrative literature review and qualitative interviews with an industry expert to validate findings.
Performance is measured using a set of 15 key indicators that cover requirements quality, project management, technical development, and architectural design, aligned with the company's internal ePEP process.
The model integrates the Automotive SPICE framework, Lean management/software principles, and the 5 Whys problem-solving technique.
While frameworks like Automotive SPICE provide process guidance, they do not prescribe the tools or metrics for implementation; therefore, companies must define their own meaningful metrics to reflect their specific business reality.
The 5 Whys technique is used to perform root cause analysis during process deviations, which helps organizations move beyond fixing symptoms toward long-term process optimization.
