The primary aim of this research is to investigate the challenges and economic ramifications of Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture (UPA) within the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus. The study seeks to identify operational hurdles while analyzing the economic impact of these activities on both the university community and the local economy.
4.2 Farm 2
Nestled stone's throw away from the road leading to the entrance of Brunei Hostel, a vibrant commercial farm thrives, showcasing the remarkable diversity and ingenuity of agricultural practices within this region. This particular farm specializes in the cultivation of a variety of vegetables, including Spring Onions, Lettuce/Cabbage, Carrots, and Green Pepper, each meticulously grown and distributed to local markets per bed. As shown in Figure 4.2.
4.2.1 Farm structure
The organization of this farm reflects a well-established hierarchy, with farmers divided into two distinct categories: Masters and "boys." This hierarchical structure is common in many Ghanaian agricultural settings, with Masters typically holding seniority and expertise, while "boys" often serve as apprentices or laborers.
4.2.2 Irrigation system and water source
One of the standout features of this commercial farm is its innovative irrigation system. A nearby stream serves as a crucial water source, and it is ingeniously utilized to channel water to the fields. The irrigation system involves the use of a generator and a network of pipes, enabling the efficient distribution of water across the cultivated beds. This system primarily employs surface or flood irrigation techniques. Additionally, water cans are used interchangeably with the piped irrigation system, providing flexibility in managing water resources.

This work examines the challenges and economic impact of practicing Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture (UPA) specifically within the campus environment of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Key themes include the operational challenges like water access and soil quality, the economic contribution of urban farms through employment and income, and the role of sustainable practices in urban development.
The primary goal is to bridge the knowledge gap regarding how UPA initiatives function and contribute to the economic well-being of the KNUST community.
The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative data from recorded interviews with farmers and site observations with quantitative analysis of agricultural yields and input costs.
The main content describes the characteristics of various farm types on campus, interprets the challenges such as market access and climate factors, and discusses the economic impact on the local farmers.
Essential keywords include UPA,KNUST, sustainable development, food security, economic impact, and farm management practices.
These terms represent a hierarchical labor structure prevalent in Ghanaian agriculture, where "Masters" hold institutional seniority and technical knowledge, while "boys" act as hired labor or apprentices.
Access to this water source significantly boosts productivity and reduces vulnerability to rainfall fluctuations, giving these farms a comparative economic advantage over others.
It serves as an example of an institutionalized commercial venture that provides employment and demonstrates the potential of aquaculture in urban settings.
