Magical Realism in German and Igbo Literatures: A Comparative Study
This paper compares the use of magical realism as a technique in German and Igbo literatures. Particular attention is paid to folk tales in Brother Grimm’s collections, also E.T.A Hoffmann’s novella. Some written Igbo folk tales and tales inside Chinua Achebe’s novel like Things Fall Apart are used for the study.
It is found that the world of the supernatural is depicted as real in the two national literatures. The natural and the supernatural are blended into one believable entity. Magical realism can therefore be described as an approach that is found in primitive literatures, also borrowed by contemporary artists in their artistic fairy tales to express their views about their contemporary societies. Thus the magical realists make the extra-ordinary to appear ordinary while the ordinary appears extra-ordinary as seen in the works of the German and Igbo authors mentioned above.

This volume serves as an interdisciplinary collection of academic essays covering diverse subjects such as literature, political science, religion, and sports psychology, aiming to network scholarly ideas across international academic boundaries.
The essays traverse post-colonial literary criticism, the sociological status of women in religious structures, the political realities of modern Liberia, and the pedagogical challenges of promoting the German language in Africa.
Several contributions, particularly those by Dr. Orjinta, question the systemic patriarchal barriers that prevent women from assuming leadership positions in both Islamic and Christian institutions, analyzing how historical interpretations contribute to this marginalization.
The contributors utilize qualitative approaches, including literary content analysis, discourse analysis of oral traditions (proverbs), and historical-theological review to examine social and cultural phenomena.
The literary sections provide comparative analyses of African and European texts, focusing on the use of magical realism as a tool for interpreting complex social realities and the application of European literary genres like the "Bildungsroman" to African narratives.
The keywords reflect a focus on identity, culture, power structures, and tradition, encapsulating the intersection between historical discourse and contemporary social change in African and global contexts.
Dr. Orjinta critiques the church's perceived passivity regarding social and political corruption, calling for an evolution toward more concrete social actions to serve the material and moral welfare of the population.
The author argues that German language instruction in Nigeria has suffered from poor placement and insufficient cultural immersion; he advocates for a shift toward an "address-oriented" and culture-contrastive methodology to increase its relevance and appeal.
