The primary objective of this study is to analyze the influence of safety management practices—specifically safety promotion, policies, risk management, and safety assurance—on employee performance within NASCO Food Nigeria Limited. The research seeks to provide firm-specific empirical evidence to bridge the gap in current literature, which often focuses on heavy industries like construction or oil and gas, and to offer actionable recommendations for improving organizational safety and productivity.
1.1 Background to the Study
Employee performance is a central determinant of organizational competitiveness, and in manufacturing environments it is closely tied to how effectively an organization manages workplace hazards. Globally, occupational safety has moved from being treated as a peripheral regulatory obligation to being recognized as a strategic organizational input: firms that manage risk systematically tend to report fewer production disruptions, lower indirect costs from injury and absence, and higher levels of employee trust and discretionary effort (Fernández-Muñiz, Montes-Peón, & Vázquez-Ordás, 2007). This shift in framing from safety as cost to safety as investment underpins the rationale for this study.
NASCO Food Nigeria Limited operates within this general context but also within a more specific one. It is a unit of the NASCO Group, a Nigerian conglomerate founded in 1963 in Jos, Plateau State, beginning with sub-Saharan Africa's first jute-bag factory and later diversifying into food, household, and packaging products (NASCO Group, n.d.-a). NASCO Foods Nigeria Limited became the first indigenous company to manufacture cornflakes and allied cereal products locally, starting in 1984, and today produces biscuits, cornflakes, and wafers as one of the operating companies within the wider NASCO federation (NASCO Group, n.d.-b). As a food-manufacturing operation, the firm carries a dual safety mandate uncommon to many other manufacturing sub-sectors: protecting the physical safety of its production workforce, and protecting the microbiological and physical integrity of the food products that workforce handles. Hazards in a food-processing environment moving machinery, high-temperature processes, dust explosion risk from grain and flour handling, slip hazards from processing residues sit alongside food-safety hazards that arise from the same physical environment, so that occupational safety management and food-safety management are, in practice, difficult to separate.
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION: This chapter introduces the study, outlines the background regarding workplace safety, states the research problem, defines objectives, hypotheses, and key terms, and provides an organizational profile of the case study firm.
CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW: This chapter covers the theoretical frameworks (Maslow, Herzberg, Heinrich), conceptual definitions of safety management, and an empirical review of existing studies on how safety practices impact employee performance.
CHAPTER THREE: METHODOLOGY: This chapter details the research design, population, sampling techniques, data collection instruments, and the analytical approach used to investigate the research objectives.
CHAPTER FOUR: DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION: This chapter presents the findings based on the survey responses, analyzes them according to the research questions and hypotheses, and discusses the implications of these results.
CHAPTER FIVE: SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: This chapter provides a summary of the key findings, draws conclusions, offers practical recommendations for the firm, and highlights the contribution to knowledge alongside limitations and suggestions for future research.

The study investigates the relationship between four key dimensions of safety management (promotion, policy, risk management, and safety assurance) and employee performance within a specific food-manufacturing context in Nigeria.
The research themes include the strategic value of safety investments, the impact of safety training and hazard identification on staff, and the role of leadership in creating a secure working environment.
The primary goal is to determine how safety-management practices specifically correlate with and influence employee performance at NASCO Food Nigeria Limited to generate evidence-based, firm-specific improvements.
The study utilizes a descriptive, cross-sectional survey design, gathering quantitative data from a stratified sample of 109 employees through a structured questionnaire.
The main body reviews relevant literature, establishes a theoretical framework (including Maslow's and Herzberg's theories), details the research methodology, and performs a comprehensive analysis of survey findings related to safety practices.
Key terms include Safety Management, Employee Performance, Occupational Health and Safety, Risk Management, and Food Manufacturing.
The study highlights a dual safety mandate where the firm must manage both standard occupational hazards for employees and stringent food-safety integrity, which complicates the safety-management environment compared to other sectors.
The findings indicate that while clear safety policies are important, inconsistent enforcement significantly negatively impacts employee morale, suggesting that procedural fairness is as crucial as the existence of the policy itself.
