The primary aim of this research is to advance an understanding of the distinctive characteristics of the German and UK environmental blogospheres, specifically focusing on their structures and content. The study addresses the lack of comparative research on environmental blogging in Europe, which has historically been heavily dominated by US-centric perspectives, and assesses how these two distinct national environments influence digital environmental activism and communication.
5.1.1.3. Sustainable Lifestyle
The major theme of the German sample was sustainable lifestyle (60%), but this segment was only half as large in the UK sample (30%). Sustainable lifestyle blogs inform the readers about ways to lead a sustainable life, for example by eating biologically produced food, by reducing emissions released by buildings or by producing renewable energy at home using solar panels.
While environmental blogs, as seen in the previous sections, are dominated by political themes in the UK, the role of the individual in making human life sustainable for the planet is the central topic in Germany.
Could cultural factors be responsible for this? Geert Hofstede, a Dutch scholar specialised in researching cultural differences across the world, developed a model that makes it possible to compare different cultures: The Five Dimensions of Culture. These include the Power Distance Index (PDI), Individualism (IDV), Masculinity (MAS), Uncertainty Avoidance Index (UAI) and Long-Term Orientation (LTO) (Hofstede, 2001).
For the considerations about sustainable lifestyle, the most interesting dimension is Individuality, which Hofstede defines as the extent to which individuals are connected to groups. That refers to the question whether everyone is supposed to take care of himself or whether everyone works for the welfare of a group. Hofstede points out that “group” does not necessarily refer to nations, but could also refer to families, school classes and the like (Hofstede, 2001).
As the graph below (Hofstede, 2011) shows, the UK indeed scores very high for Individualism (IDV); 89 out of 100 points to be precise. Germany reaches a score of 67 out of 100.
1. INTRODUCTION: Outlines the rise of the internet and blogs as platforms for expression and establishes the research focus on comparing the German and UK environmental blogospheres.
2. LITERATURE REVIEW: Examines foundational concepts including the definition of blogs, the history of environmental movements in Germany and the UK, and existing methodological approaches to digital research.
3. METHODOLOGY: Details the empirical comparative approach, justifying the use of content analysis and an adapted grounded theory model to categorize and evaluate blog data.
4. FINDINGS OF THE PRIMARY RESEARCH: Presents the gathered data on blog categories, entry lengths, reader comments, and the frequency of personal pronouns to highlight national differences.
5. DISCUSSION AND SYNTHESIS OF THE FINDINGS: Analyzes the structural and content-based differences between the two countries, exploring potential cultural and political explanations for the observed trends.
6. CONCLUSIONS: Summarizes the research findings regarding the objectives, offers recommendations for environmental bloggers, and suggests directions for future longitudinal research.

The research provides a comparative analysis of the German and UK environmental blogospheres to identify distinctive structural and content-related characteristics.
The study focuses on four main thematic areas: Parliamentary and Public Debates, Activism, Sustainable Lifestyle, and Renewable Energy/Climate Change.
The goal is to advance an understanding of the unique characteristics of environmental blogs in Germany and the UK, specifically examining how they differ in terms of structure and content.
The study primarily utilizes content analysis to generate quantitative data, supplemented by an adapted version of grounded theory to establish qualitative blog categories.
The main body covers a comprehensive literature review, the methodological framework, the presentation of primary research findings, and a detailed discussion synthesizing these results within a cultural and political context.
The work is defined by terms such as environmentalism, comparative study, digital activism, blogosphere, and cross-cultural media analysis.
The study finds that UK blogs are significantly more politicized and focused on parliamentary debates, whereas German blogs prioritize sustainable lifestyle topics, likely influenced by differing cultural levels of individualism.
Grounded theory was used to establish relevant blog categories because existing research did not provide sufficient thematic sub-categorization for the specific sample of blogs analyzed.
The study concludes that while the environmental blogosphere remains a niche space in both countries, it offers significant potential for environmental movements to increase their political influence and public engagement if utilized more professionally.
