The primary objective of this thesis is to empirically investigate the impact of the Reformation on the historical and social development of Christianity in South-South Nigeria. The research addresses the critical need to understand how 16th-century European Reformation movements influenced the missionary activities that ultimately shaped the religious, educational, and healthcare landscapes of Nigeria.
Martin Luther and the Diet of Worms
The Diet of Worms was a general Conference, or assembly of the estates of the Holy Roman Empire that took place in Worms, a town situated in what is now Germany. It was conducted from January 28 to May 25, 1521, with Emperor Charles V presiding. Although other issues were dealt with at the Diet of Worms, it is most memorable for Martin Luther, founder of the Lutheran movement. Diet of Worms “was made famous by Martin Luther’s appearance before it to respond to charges of heresy.” (Diet of Worms, Britannica 2012). Catholic encyclopedia (2012) describes the situation in Germany thus: “Germany was living on a politico-religious volcano. All walks of life were in a convulsive state of unrest that boded ill for Church and State.” (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/09438b.htm). Because of the bewildered political and religious circumstance of the time, rather than before the pope or a council of the Roman Catholic Church, Luther was summoned before the political authorities to defend himself on his writings.

The thesis focuses on examining the impact of the European Reformation on the historical and social evolution of Christianity in South-South Nigeria, specifically through the legacy left by Christian missionaries.
The work covers themes such as the abolition of the slave trade, the establishment of Western-style education, the founding of medical institutions, and the influence of Reformation theology on cultural practices in Nigeria.
The research asks to what extent the Reformation has impacted the cultural, educational, historical, and health-related development of Nigeria through Christian missionary activities.
The author utilized a survey research design, gathering data from a sample of 1,000 academic staff across seven universities in the South-South zone of Nigeria using a structured questionnaire.
The main body examines the historical origins of the Reformation in Europe, its core theological theories, and its direct application in the Nigerian context regarding social reform and human development.
The key terms include Reformation, Christianity, Nigeria, Missionary Enterprise, Slave Trade, Education, and Social Development.
The author argues that the Reformation’s emphasis on the dignity of the individual and the Bible as the supreme authority provided the moral foundation and rallying point for Christian abolitionists like William Wilberforce.
The research highlights that missionaries, driven by the social aspect of the gospel revived during the Reformation, were the pioneers in building dispensaries and hospitals in Nigeria, often filling a void where no government services existed.
The author argues that while missionaries had human shortcomings, they served as "trail blazers" of development, and that the arguments of cultural nationalists who denounce missionary work overlook the significant positive contributions to infrastructure and human dignity.
