This master's thesis examines the migration of operator-provided voice services from circuit-switched (CS) networks to packet-switched IP networks using Voice over LTE (VOLTE) technology. The study focuses on the implementation of IMS-based VOLTE in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH), analyzing its implications from a mobile operator's perspective.
This master's thesis focuses on the key concepts of **VoLTE**, **IMS-based VoLTE**, **HD voice**, **mobile network architecture**, **telephony performance**, **data performance**, and **parameter optimization**. It analyzes the implications of deploying VOLTE in the DACH region, exploring the transition from circuit-switched to packet-switched voice services and the impact on user experience.
VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE. It is critical because it migrates voice services from old circuit-switched networks to modern packet-switched IP networks, allowing for high-quality telephony and data throughput simultaneously.
The thesis focuses on the DACH region, which includes Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
CSFB (Circuit-Switched Fallback) drops the connection to 2G or 3G for voice calls, while VoLTE keeps the call on the 4G network using IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem).
Voice quality is assessed using methodologies like PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) and POLQA (Perceptual Objective Listening Quality Analysis).
Key parameters include Robust Header Compression (RoHC), Transmission Time Interval (TTI) Bundling, Discontinuous Reception (DRX), and Semi-Persistent Scheduling (SPS).
The thesis analyzes voice quality performance, comparing telecom-grade VoLTE services provided by operators against over-the-top (OTT) internet-based voice applications.
