The primary objective of this study is to conduct a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Wole Soyinka’s play, The Beatification of Area Boy, to uncover how language is utilized to establish and maintain power structures, ideology, and social inequality within the Nigerian context.
4.1.1 Turn Taking
In every ideal conversation, two speakers speak and it is abnormal when more than one person is talking at a time. Turn taking refers to the way each speaker takes turn in a conversation. Every interactants, by a sort of unspoken mutual agreement, know when it is their turn to speak. If one does not, he/she may be informed. Turn taking as an element of speech is often influenced by certain factors such as culture, personality, age, gender etc.
Instances of turn taking in the text are as follows:
1.
Trader: Enh? Oh, good morning, your lordship.
Judge: It’s a good display, not so? And to think all I did was breathe against the horizon. It was the last exhalation before I lay down, emptying all the secret spaces of my body, I had completed my nightly exercises, yoga, do you practice yoga at all?
Pg. 5
Also, the technique Trader used here to signal Judge’s turn is by name calling. He refers to Judge as “your lordship” because he respect him despite his mental weakness. The exchange also present power relation between the two speakers. Judge is superior in the conversation as indicated by Trader calling him “your lordship”.

The research is a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Wole Soyinka's play The Beatification of Area Boy, aiming to expose the underlying power relations and ideologies embedded in the dialogue.
The study focuses on political exploitation, the social stratification between the elite and the masses, and the impact of cultural beliefs and societal ills on the lives of Nigerians.
The primary goal is to apply Norman Fairclough’s CDA framework to reveal how language is used as a tool of dominance, injustice, and inequality in the socio-political landscape of the play.
The researcher utilizes Norman Fairclough’s three-stage analytical model (description, interpretation, and explanation) as the primary theoretical framework for the textual analysis.
The main body examines various discourse elements including turn-taking, wording, grammatical and lexical cohesion, and sociocultural practices within the context of the play's narrative.
The work is characterized by its focus on Critical Discourse Analysis, the intersection of language and power, and its evaluation of Wole Soyinka's unique literary style as a critique of Nigerian society.
The research views the belief in 'missing genitals' as a sociocultural phenomenon that reflects African cultural fears and the susceptibility of society to myths, which the author uses to demonstrate the barbaric nature of certain social practices.
The play portrays the political elite, specifically military rulers, as coercive figures who exercise power through force and neglect the welfare of the masses, using discourse to maintain their dominance.
The researcher concludes that The Beatification of Area Boy is a significant sociopolitical satire that successfully uses language to expose the societal ills and moral decadence prevalent in Nigeria.
