This study aims to assess the impact of power sector reforms, specifically restructuring and privatization, on the performance of the Nigerian electricity sector over the last twenty-five years by analyzing operational indicators across three distinct phases of ownership.
2.4 CHALLENGES AFTER PRIVATIZATION OF THE ELECTRICITY SECTOR
In spite of the reform and privatization process introduced into the sector, no significant improvement has been witnessed with regards to power supply and availability to consumers. According to a recent power sector poll conducted by NOIPolls Limited in the second quarter of 2015 , the results reveal that a large proportion of households across all geopolitical zones in Nigeria have not seen any improvement in the power supply for over 30months. Their findings also reveal that the power supply is erratic with no clear consistency of the condition over the stated period (Nigeria Communications Week, 2015).
With these unconvincing results, it is obvious there are still numerous challenges confronting the electricity sector of Nigeria. A few of the major challenges are explained below;
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION: Discusses the background of the study and the rationale for the reform, while establishing the project's objectives and justifications.
CHAPTER TWO BACKGROUND OF PRIVATIZATION IN NIGERIA: Provides an overview of privatization in Nigeria, specifically detailing the history, the electricity sector, the privatization process, and existing challenges.
CHAPTER THREE LITERATURE REVIEW: Reviews relevant theories and empirical studies regarding privatization, economic reforms, and performance within the global and Nigerian contexts.
CHAPTER FOUR RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND DATA: Details the sources of data and the specific methodologies used to evaluate the impact of ownership changes on sectoral performance.
CHAPTER FIVE RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS: Presents the findings and discusses the implications of the performance changes observed after the privatization process.
CHAPTER SIX CONCLUSION: Concludes the study and provides strategic recommendations to address the challenges facing the electricity sector.

This project assesses the impact of the power sector reform program, specifically restructuring and privatization, on the performance of the electricity sector in Nigeria over a twenty-five-year period.
The work covers the history of privatization in Nigeria, the specific process of unbundling the national utility, the role of regulatory governance, the impact of the economic environment, and the operational performance of new private sector investors.
The core research question examines whether the shift from state-owned monopoly to private enterprise has successfully enhanced the performance and technical efficiency of the Nigerian electricity sector.
The study utilizes the Megginson, Nash, and Van Randenborgh (MNR) methodology for comparing pre- and post-privatization data, combined with a regression analysis using control variables such as GDP per capita and a regulatory governance index.
The main body examines the performance indicators (capacity factor, losses, access to electricity, consumption per capita, and tariff), the transition from public to private ownership, and the institutional challenges that continue to affect the sector.
The study is characterized by terms such as privatization, electricity sector, Nigeria, performance indicators, and regulatory governance.
The research segments the timeline into three critical periods: the period of pure state ownership (1990-2004), the transition and unbundling phase (2005-2013), and the full privatization period (2013-2015).
The study observed a significant increase in electricity tariffs after the privatization process, which the government intended to use to ensure the sector's commercial viability and to encourage further investment.
The MYTO was implemented by the regulatory commission to provide a sustainable long-term framework for pricing, ensuring that private investors could recoup their investments while attempting to balance consumer costs.
The author highlights that reforming the electricity sector is more complex than other sectors because it involves massive infrastructure, requires high investment, and often results in local monopolies where consumers cannot switch providers.
