This paper describes and discusses a contemporary literary current called „air-root literature“, a concept proposed by Bremen-based publisher „Sujet Verlag“. As a current is naturally vague and this particular one still in development, not a precise definition is expected from this work, but rather a trend-setting approach and future-oriented outlook.
The key factor in understanding the value of this paper is to acknowledge the importance of migration issues in today's cultures, especially the field of literature. In international and especially German literary science, there has already been research about this phenomenon, mostly since the 1980s. However, existing terms like „migration literature“ or „postcolonial literature“ do not sufficiently describe the niche, in which air-root literature is supposed to settle.
To lay a basis for this concept, the first part of the paper consists of different theories and describes the state of the art in relevant scientific areas. First of all, the basic standards of genre theory in literature are outlined. Then follows a listing of some of the most common terms that name forms of literature that have to do with migration or its consequences. Afterward, an understanding of literary science as a form of cultural science, as proposed among others during the cultural turn of arts and humanities, shall be mediated. More basic theories needed to lay the foundation of the new current include the concept of alienness and cultural identity, as well as the difference between inter- and transculturality.
On this foundation, an approach to a definition of the concept air-root literature can be attempted. The approach draws on insights gained in previous chapters and designs a draft outline of the current. Furthermore, the finding of a proper name and the history of the institution behind air-root literature are illustrated.
Lastly follows an empirical part, in which several literary works, that are supposed to represent air-root literature, are analyzed as to their transcultural characteristics and cultural identity constructions. The works are all of a different kind, some novels, some poetry, some short prose, so that the ambiguous nature of air-root literature can be displayed. By ways of the definition approach as well as the in-depth-analysis, a relatively clear outline of the concept can be drawn, that shows air-root literature as a mainly transcultural literary current that occupies its own niche in the field of migration- related literature.
„In many European countries, 'migration literature' has already moved from a position at the margin of literature to an acknowledged and even canonical status. In Britain and France some of the most important writers of the past fifty years belong to migration literature; though figures such as V.S. Naipaul and Salman Rushdie were first accepted within English literature under the category of 'post-colonial', as within French literature were Aimé Césaire and Tahar Ben Jaloun. However, a rather heterogeneous picture appears across Europe: migration literature is today an integrated part of the literary scene in Britain and France and to a lesser extent in e.g. Germany and Sweden. There, in the absence of a significant 'post-colonial' culture, such authors, among the most innovative as well as popular, are categorized as part of a 'migration-trend': it is in German that the term 'migration literature' seems first to have come into use.“4
