Conclusion
The primary goal of this thesis is to interpret the Holy Bible—specifically the lamentations and cries of Rachel—to challenge seminary students to move beyond traditional church services. The work aims to promote social justice by fostering equality, dignity, and human rights, arguing that a true ministry requires an active engagement with the social and political realities of the world, much like balancing a Bible in one hand and a newspaper in the other.
Prophetic Mourning and the Cries of Today
In our Practice of Prophetic Ministry class, we studied Jeremiah 31:15 –16 and Matthew 2:18: “Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not. 16 Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work, shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.” Looking at Scripture from the vantage point of the bottom up inspired me to look at this scripture in terms of current world events. I viewed it using the lens or eyes of recent mothers in the newspapers. Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Garner and Mrs. Brown were all weeping for their sons who died from the results of misunderstanding and racism. The cries of these mothers can be heard clearly today as were the cries of Rachel and the Lord stated their work needs to be done so we can be rewarded with the return of the children.
Where is the second part of the scripture in today’s terms? The answer is that it is the role of the young theologian to bring the word of God to comfort these mothers but to also call them to action to do the work needed to “come again from the land of the enemy”. One need only look as far as Jordan Davis’s senseless death and the work his mother, Lucy McBath, has done to see the Scripture being relevant and present in today’s world.
Introduction: Examines the parental mandate to stay informed through both the Bible and the newspaper, emphasizing that ministers must be socially and politically aware.
Chapter 1: God: The Spiritual Trinity and Physical Manifestation: Explores the messy, multifaceted nature of God as reflected in the suffering of modern, marginalized populations.
Chapter 2: Jesus of Liberation and Justice: Reframes Jesus as a working-class, marginalized Jewish figure whose mission was the political and social liberation of the oppressed.
Chapter 3: Holy Spirit of Intercession: Discusses the Holy Spirit as an active, transformative, and transpersonal force that compels collective social action.
Chapter 4: Soteriology: Argues that salvation is not merely an individual, spiritual concern but a physical, social, and political commitment to justice.
Chapter 5: Ecclesiology and The Mission of the Church: Posits that the true mission of the church is to be a community of justice, challenging power structures rather than focusing solely on personal piety.
Chapter 6: Eschatology Our Own Fault: Interprets "end-time" prophecy not as a distant apocalypse, but as a warning for humanity to address current failures like racism and planetary destruction.
Chapter 7: Seminary: Reflects on the author's personal journey in seminary, highlighting the integration of historical texts with modern suffering.
Chapter 8: Finding Myself in Seminary and Systematic Theology: Details the personal growth and theological development experienced at the New York Theological Seminary.
Chapter 9: The Impact of Donald Trump’s anti LGBT policies: Critiques the current political climate and calls for empathy and resistance against policies that marginalize specific communities.
Conclusion: Reaffirms the necessity of stepping out of comfort zones to live out a faith characterized by service to both God and the planet.
