2.2 The ‘’Ballot or The Bullet’’ Speech
Malcolm gave a lot of speeches. One of them is The Ballot or the Bullet speech, which he performed on 3rd April, 1964. The people could hear it during a meeting in Ohio. The main aspect referred to in his speech was obviously Racial Equality. It was rather not peaceful time in the USA. Congress was to debate about a bill which was connected with segregation in public facilities. Millions of people had a chance to watch TV to see how the police and their dogs were attacking African American children who took part in protesting against segregation in Birmingham or Alabama. He started his speech by trying to make his listeners aware of the differences and one common problem, namely ‘’political oppression, economic exploitation, and social degradation at the hands of the white man.’’
‘’No, I'm not an American. I'm one of the 22 million black people who are the victims of Americanism. One of the 22 million black people who are the victims of democracy, nothing but disguised hypocrisy. So, I'm not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or a flag-saluter, or a flag-waver -- no, not I. I'm speaking as a victim of this American system. And I see America through the eyes of the victim. I don't see any American dream; I see an American nightmare.”
