The primary objective of this work is to provide a comprehensive taxonomic study and systematic account of the genera Metapenaeopsis and Metapenaeus found within the Indian coastal region. By examining existing museum collections and literature, the research aims to clarify the taxonomic status of various species, offer clear identification keys, and document their morphological features and geographical distribution.
Metapenaeus alcocki George and Rao, 1966
The species was described by George and Rao (1966) from Gulf of Kutch, North-West coast of India. A brief history of the species with special reference to Indian contributions has been given below.
1966 Metapenaeus alcocki George and Rao, J. mar. biol. Ass. India, 8(1) : 146-152; Deshmuk, 1975 Indian J. Fish., George, 1980, J. Bombay nat. Hist. Soc., 76:297-304, Rao, 1983, Indian J. Fish., 30(1) : 124-134.
Type Species: Metapenaeus alcocki George and Rao, 1966, J. mar. biol. Ass. India, 8(1): 146-151.
Type Locality: Gulf of Kutch, North – West Coast of India (22028/ N, 70003/ E).
Material Examined: 1 male (76 mm) and 2 females (78-90 mm), ZSI. Reg. No. C4909/2, Subhas Port, Gujarat, 10.12.1992, H.C. Ghosh and party; 1 male (97 mm), CMFRI. No. 90, Gulf of Kutch (Allotype), 16.4.1963, M.J. George.
Introduction: Provides an overview of the importance of prawns as a protein source, clarifies the terminology between "prawn" and "shrimp," and discusses the history of the classification of Penaeidae.
Chapter 1: Details the materials and methods used in the study, including specimen preservation, dissection techniques, and the morphological terminology applied to the taxonomic study.
Chapter 2: Presents the systematic account of the family Penaeidae, including the diagnostic characters of the superfamily Penaeoidea and a key to its families.
Chapter 3: Focuses on the genus Metapenaeopsis, providing a taxonomic account, diagnostic characters, and an identification key for the species recorded in India.
Chapter 4: Provides a comprehensive taxonomic account and identification key for the species belonging to the genus Metapenaeus in the Indian region.

The work primarily focuses on the taxonomic revision and systematic account of the genera Metapenaeopsis and Metapenaeus within the Indian coastal region to support the identification of commercially important species.
The study centers on the family Penaeidae, specifically detailing 12 species of the genus Metapenaeopsis and 14 species of the genus Metapenaeus.
The goal is to provide researchers and fishery biologists with practical, dichotomous keys that enable accurate identification of species based on morphological features such as the rostrum, petasma, and thelycum.
The research is based on examining specimens preserved in national collections, supplemented by literature review, anatomical dissections under stereoscopic binocular microscopes, and illustrative work using line drawings and camera lucida.
Each species account typically includes a description of its taxonomy, diagnostic morphological characters, geographical distribution, and details of material examined during the study.
Key terms include morphological differentiation, taxonomic revision, systematic position, geographical range, and diagnostic features of the exoskeleton, such as carination, sulci, and reproductive structures.
They are distinguished by specific gill structures, the absence of eggs on abdominal pleopods, and distinct morphological features of their thoracic and abdominal appendages as outlined in Chapter 2.
These are primary secondary sexual structures used for taxonomic differentiation in both the genus Metapenaeopsis and Metapenaeus, providing distinct features for accurate species identification.
