This literature review aims to explore current research about romantic relationship communication of European and North American adolescents and young adults on Facebook. The review focuses on communication behaviours observed in Knapp's (1978) three relational stages: formation, maintenance, and dissolution.
The introduction provides an overview of the research topic and the methodology used in the literature review. Chapter 2 explores relevant theories, including social exchange theory, social network theories, Knapp's relational stage model, and Baxter's relational dialectics theory. Chapter 3 examines Facebook communication and user demographics, analyzing internet and Facebook usage patterns, relationship status distributions, and gender differences. Chapter 4 delves into the relationship between romantic relationships and Facebook, focusing on the role of Facebook in relationship formation, maintenance, and dissolution.
This literature review focuses on romantic relationship communication, online social media, social networking sites, and Facebook. It examines the influence of Facebook on the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of romantic relationships among European and North American adolescents and young adults.
Facebook serves as a primary tool for gathering information about potential partners and as a platform for early-stage communication before a relationship is established.
Becoming "Facebook official" involves publicly declaring a relationship status on the platform, which is often seen as a significant milestone in modern romantic relationships.
Maintenance on Facebook requires the publication of relationship information. The frequency of these posts often depends on the couple's network and can lead to dialectical struggles regarding privacy.
Common behaviors include clearing profiles of information related to the ex-partner, but also negative actions like monitoring or harassment of the former partner.
The availability of information to the entire network can lead to high levels of social control and pressure from friends and family, impacting the couple's dynamic.
The research draws on Social Exchange Theory, Knapp's Relational Stage Model, and Baxter's Relational Dialectics Theory to understand online communication patterns.
