The study aimed to improve the reading skills of Grade VII Deaf students in Agusan National High School through the SMARE (Strategic Metalinguistic Approach for Reading Enhancement) Learning Tasks Work Book. A 30-item pre-test was constructed consisting the three least-mastered competencies/skills which were the vocabulary development, noting details and logical sequence of events during the second quarterly exam for school year 2016-2017. The seven participants took the following intervention learning tasks: Match Me, Pull-Me-Out, Wordy Pixs, Visually Right, Find the Elements, Elements Complete, Right Before Your Eyes, The Perfect Match and Labeling Up. Statistical tools used were frequencies and percentages. It was found out that the metalinguistic strategies applied in the different learning tasks greatly helped improve the reading skills of Deaf students; tasks like Right Before Your Eyes, Wordy Pixs, Labeling Up and Match which came out to be the best among the learning tasks introduced. For recommendation, SPED and English teachers will be enticed to use the workbook to improve the reading skills of their learners; conduct remedial reading activities, and encourage teachers learn basic sign language in order to help the Deaf learners develop their reading skill.

Me, Pull Me Out, Wordy Pix, Visually Right, Find the Elements, Elements Complete, Right Before Your Eyes, Perfect Match at Labeling up. Right, Wordy Pixs, Match me, at Labeling up.
In every accomplishment of one’s dream were collaborative efforts of the individuals who generously extended an extra mile to make it happen. So it is but appropriate to value and recognize these individuals for they have been very instrumental to the success of this researcher’s study:
Grade 7-deaf students, learners who are close to the researcher’s heart, their patience, diligence and determination to learn had been her inspiration to discover and develop instructional materials which are suited to their special needs;
Rosanilla B. Consad, SPED Coordinator of Agusan National High School, for the unselfish contribution of her insights, suggestions and expertise for this study to be improved;
Prof. Fabian C. Pontiveros, Dr. Evelyn Nada and Dr. Adelyne M. Costelo Abrea, members of the Oral Examination Committee, who gave insightful suggestions for the enhancement of this work; Prof. Jeanette Tibay-Gongora, thesis adviser, whose expertise, kindness and patience had greatly touched the heart of the researcher especially when fate was cruel and she was on the verge of giving up. Pushing her beyond her limitation in order to accomplish all of the necessary documents and whose friendship, generosity, and extreme motivation never faltered nor faded;
Annie, mother of the researcher, for her unfaltering love and support and to her just deceased Papa whose spirit lifted her up amidst depression and surrender;
Kim, Edward, Ysabel, her children and husband Jeboy, her precious God’s gifts the very reason why life has its meaning and her torch when path becomes dim and narrow;
most especially to Divine Father’s constant intervention, abundant mercy and infinite blessings…. she is forever grateful.
To all, thank you very much!
CPP
to my deaf family
that may find portals of learning as they journey towards independent reading;
Mama Annie, siblings Catherine, Charles, Jose Jr., Caroline & Charity Husband Emmanuel III, children Kim Stephanie, Kim Edward & Kimjae Ysabel , nephews and nieces, friends, and to my loving Papa,
my life support system and human engine to keep me moving forward towards my journey
and to Baby Jesus, Senor Sto. Nino; to whom I pleadingly seek intervention in the midst of confusion and time constrain, this fruit of sleepless nights, hard work and sacrifices is lovingly dedicated to you all.
