CHAPTER 5- CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
5.1 CONCLUSION
5.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
The primary aim of this thesis is to explore strategies for sustainable urban development by comparing practices in international cities and deriving applicable lessons for Lagos, Nigeria. The research addresses the challenges of rapid population growth and urbanization in Lagos by evaluating and proposing frameworks to enhance environmental and social sustainability.
3.2.1 Built Environment in Freiburg
In June 1995, Freiburg city committee embraced a resolution to only allow construction of "low energy buildings" on municipal land, which implemented every single new building to conform to low energy specifications. Since energy saving concepts have been incorporated in designs at an early stage in Freiburg, and the most environmentally cordial energy supplies are contractually endorsed for all buildings (Walliser et al., 2012).
The followings are planning strategies established in the city:
• The establishment of large and interconnecting green areas when planning for new urban development areas;
• Promotion of green roofs;
• The establishment of new roads;
• Establishment of children’s play areas close to green areas;
• Planting greenery along new tramlines and overhead power cables. In addition to making the city greener, this also contributes to a reduction in noise pollution.
CHAPTER 1- INTRODUCTION: This chapter introduces the global relevance of sustainable urban development, defines the research scope, and outlines the primary objectives regarding the Lagos case study.
CHAPTER 2 - LITERATURE REVIEW: This chapter provides a historical narrative of sustainable development and defines the core concepts and pillars (environmental, economic, and social) essential for urban sustainability.
CHAPTER 3 – COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS: SAMPLE CITIES STUDY: This chapter investigates Freiburg, Ahmedabad, and Durban using six sustainability factors derived from SDG Goal 11 to identify successful strategies.
CHAPTER 4- CASE STUDY ANLAYSIS: This chapter examines the historical and current state of Lagos and applies the lessons learned from the comparative study to propose sustainable policies.
CHAPTER 5- CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: This chapter summarizes the research findings and provides final recommendations to guide policymakers and urban practitioners in Lagos.

The research focuses on investigating sustainable urban development practices in three selected international cities to provide a framework for improving Lagos City.
The work centers on six pillars: built environment, transportation, urbanization, land conservation, energy, and waste management.
The goal is to conduct a comparative analysis to draw lessons and suggest specific, sustainable policy implementations for Lagos, Nigeria.
A qualitative research method is utilized, incorporating comparative analysis and case study approaches to analyze urban development phenomena.
The main body reviews the history of sustainable development, provides a comparative analysis of three cities, and offers a sustainability analysis of Lagos with actionable policy recommendations.
The core keywords include sustainable urban development, SDG 11, comparative urban analysis, and sustainable policy frameworks for megacities like Lagos.
They represent diverse geographical regions and socioeconomic contexts that offer successful, replicable approaches to various sustainability challenges.
It evaluates the existing infrastructure and environmental challenges in Lagos and compares them against successful models to propose proactive planning measures.
