This thesis aims to determine the extent of challenges encountered by fisherfolks in Vigan City, specifically categorizing these into socio-economic, personal, and environmental variations, while examining whether a significant relationship exists between these challenges and the demographic profile of the respondents.
Environmental Variations
Fisheries and fisher folk may get affected in a wide range of ways by environmental variations. The distribution or productivity of marine and fresh water fish stocks might be affected owing to the processes such as ocean acidification, habitat damage, changes in oceanography, disruption to precipitation and freshwater availability (Daw, 2009).
Barange and Perry (2009) said that environmental variation, in particular, rising temperatures, can have both direct and indirect effects on global fish production. With increased global temperature, the spatial distribution of fish stocks might change due to the migration of fishes from one region to another in search of suitable conditions. Environmental variation will have major consequences for population dynamics of marine biota via changes in transport processes that influence dispersals and recruitment. The effects of increasing temperature on marine and freshwater ecosystems are already evident, with rapid pole ward shifts in distributions of fish and plankton in regions such as North East Atlantic, where temperature change has been rapid (Brander, 2007). Environmental variation has been implicated in mass mortalities of many aquatic species, including plants, fish, corals, and mammals (Harvell et al., 1999; Battin et al., 2007).
Small-scale fisheries and small-scale aquaculture are particularly vulnerable to environmental variation. Their vulnerability is a result of both their geographical location as well as their poverty situation. Being located at the waterfront, fishing and fish farming communities are exposed to climate related extreme events and natural hazards, such as hurricanes, cyclones, sea level rise, ocean acidification, floods and coastal erosion. Millions of people living in coastal and food plain lowlands are unable to escape regular flooding. As environmental variation impacts are harming human and natural systems including infrastructures, disturbing fish stocks, eroding natural resources and endangering species and ecosystem. These impacts also reduce resilience. Environmental variation is therefore a threat to human health, well-being and livelihoods (Barange, Bahri, 2018).
I. THE PROBLEM: Defines the scope of the study regarding the challenges faced by fisherfolks, establishes the theoretical and conceptual frameworks, and details the descriptive-correlational methodology used.
II. PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA: Provides a comprehensive statistical breakdown of the respondents' profiles and evaluates the intensity of socio-economic, personal, and environmental challenges through mean ratings.
III. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Synthesizes the core findings of the research, presents logical conclusions based on the data, and offers specific recommendations for government and community intervention.

The study focuses on identifying and analyzing the various challenges encountered by fisherfolks residing in Vigan City, specifically in the areas of San Pedro and Mindoro.
The challenges are categorized into three domains: socio-economic issues, personal challenges, and environmental variations.
The primary goal is to determine the extent of these challenges and to investigate if there is a significant statistical relationship between the demographic profile of the fisherfolks and the challenges they face.
The researchers employed a descriptive-correlational research design, utilizing a survey questionnaire to collect data from 70 purposively sampled respondents.
The main body details the demographic profile of the respondents, provides mean ratings for specific challenges, and uses correlational analysis to test the hypothesis regarding the relationship between profiles and challenges.
Key terms include Fisherfolks, Vigan City, socio-economic challenges, environmental variations, and fishing livelihood.
No, the study concluded that there is no significant relationship, implying that the identified challenges are experienced by fisherfolks regardless of their specific demographic background.
The study highlights the impacts of rising temperatures, strong waves damaging fishing nets, coral bleaching, and sea-level rise on fishing infrastructure.
The researchers recommend that the local government initiate programs to improve socio-economic status, provide training on modern fishing techniques, and address work attitude and interpersonal skills.
