This thesis investigates how to enhance text entry on wide touch screens by combining traditional manual touch interaction with eye tracking technology. The primary goal is to improve the usability and ergonomics of text editing applications on mobile devices through the introduction of the 'GazeButton' concept, which allows for multimodal interaction without obscuring screen content or requiring strenuous arm movements.
3.2 Design Considerations
Other than works that aimed to design interfaces for two-thumb text entry on tablet computers [34] [2], this thesis aims to provide more functionality in text based applications by using gaze recognition while keeping the UI straightforward. Through simplification, the mental and physical stress during tablet usage is reduced, especially regarding arm effort when using gaze instead of large arm movement. The newly presented GazeButton can be used in several ways to improve the user experience. Trying to retain simplicity and coming up with intuitive interaction techniques, the following points can be taken into consideration:
Where the user looks The user’s gaze is sensed by the eye tracker and then translated into 2D coordinates to detect where the user looks on or beside the screen as the gaze is not limited by screen dimensions. Since the user usually looks at the screen, the gaze coordinates are specified in a coordinate system whose origin is at a corner of the screen and all the gaze points correspond to pixels on the screen or imaginary pixels next to the screen with the same point density. In the text editing application of this thesis, these gaze points outside of the screen are used to expand selection ranges of objects near the screen borders when they are selected by gaze. Based on the user’s gaze, different features can be activated, so a designer can decide to implement different application reactions depending on whether the user looks at the GazeButton or somewhere else or at another specific area in the application.
