This research aims to enhance the operational efficiency of ground handling services at Victoria Falls International Airport by developing a real-time turnaround management system. The study seeks to address the lack of centralized reporting platforms and real-time monitoring tools that currently contribute to delays and inefficiencies in airline turnaround processes.
2.3 Turnaround Activities
There are several turnaround activities which are interlinked but starts with the arrival of the aircraft until the next departure of the same aircraft. During this time, aircrafts need to prepare promptly for the next flight then some operations such as refuelling , baggage loading and unloading , cleaning , catering and passengers boarding/ deboarding are needed to be done. All these operations are called “Turnaround Operations” or can also be called “Ground Handling Processes” or ‘Ground Operations’’The most used list of turnaround operations are stated below:
• Chocks on/off
• GPU connection
• Passenger boarding/deboarding
• Baggage loading/unloading
• Catering
• Cleaning/Tidy-up
• Lavatory Service
• Potable water service
• Routine maintenance check
• Fuelling
On aircraft arrival, different operations are handled; nevertheless they do not necessarily have to be done in all turnaround routines. There are different approaches to the turnaround operations by low-cost carriers and full service carriers. In the following part, these operations are explained in detailed and which operations are handled by which carrier are explained. These have been adopted from (Razal, 2016).
CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION: This chapter introduces the dissertation's focus on implementing a real-time Turnaround Management System to improve punctuality at National Handling Services in Zimbabwe.
CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW: This chapter examines global and regional turnaround activities, the importance of punctuality, theoretical foundations based on the Taylor School of Scientific Management, and the study's conceptual framework.
CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY: This chapter outlines the mixed-method research approach, covering research design, population, sampling procedures, instruments, and data collection techniques used for the study.

The research focuses on developing a real-time Turnaround Management System to improve the operational efficiency of ground handling processes at the National Handling Service (NHS) in Zimbabwe, specifically at Victoria Falls International Airport.

The primary objectives are to determine the factors that influence turnaround punctuality, explore the perceptions surrounding these activities, and find viable solutions—specifically a web-based management system—to mitigate turnaround delays.
The researcher employs a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative data analysis (using secondary flight data and binary regression models) with qualitative data (obtained through in-depth interviews with key informants) to ensure a comprehensive understanding.
The main body covers the literature review of existing turnaround practices, the interlinked nature of ground handling tasks (e.g., catering, fuelling, baggage handling), critical path analysis, and the development of a conceptual framework to guide the implementation of the proposed management system.
The key concepts characterizing the study include Aircraft Turnaround, Punctuality, Ground Handling, Critical Path Method, and Taylorism, among others relevant to airport operations and management.
The study defines the Critical Path as the longest chain of successive operations executed by an airline to achieve a turnaround, representing the absolute minimum time required for preparation unless significant improvements in productivity are achieved.
Buffer time is an additional 15-minute window intended to absorb potential delays, such as late aircraft arrivals or slow ground handling processes, allowing the airline to avoid being officially logged as "delayed."
Taylorism is used as a theoretical foundation to investigate methods of increasing employee efficiency, standardizing work processes, and optimizing time management within the labor-intensive environment of airport ground handling.
