Gegenstand der Arbeit ist die unauflösliche Verknüpfung des Todes mit der Weiblichkeit in der Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts, betrachtet hauptsächlich aus der ästhetischen Perspektive. Der Autor beschäftigt sich mit dem Thema der Darstellung des weiblichen Todes und hauptsächlich der Funktion eines schönen toten Körpers in der fiktiven und deshalb auch in der realen kulturellen Gemeinschaft in literarischen Werken. Die Thematik wurde angeregt durch die Frage, wie und warum eine große künstlerische Textproduktion aus der Motivik des weiblichen Sterbens und dessen Andenken als Bild so erfolgreich schöpfen kann. Wie es aus der literarischen Geschichte festzustellen ist, wirkt die Erzählung vom Tode einer schönen Frau sehr effektiv im Lesepublikum, besonders wenn es von der Hand des trauenden überlebenden Liebhabers verfasst wurde.
Edgar Allan Poe schloss den Charme dieser schauerlichen Thematik in der Formulierung ein: „the death, then, of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world — and equally is it beyond doubt that the lips best suited for such topic are those of a bereaved lover." Das Resultat, das aus diesem männlichen Gedankengang folgt, bezieht sich vor allem auf die – fast alle Kulturen betreffende – bedrohliche Wirkung des Todes und der Tabuisierung des sich zersetzenden Körpers, wobei der tote Körper paradoxerweise nicht nur mit Schreck, sondern auch mit faszinierender Schönheit verbunden wird. Denn in den hier untersuchten Beispielen – Gustave Flauberts „Madame Bovary“ und Heinrich Heines „Florentinische Nächte“ – wird die Verstorbene sogar zum imaginierten Begehrensobjekt des lebenden Liebhabers. Die Schilderung des romantischen Todes Emma Bovarys und der erotisierten weiblichen Leichen im Leben von Heines Held, Maximilian, beweist dennoch die Voraussetzung eines immer überlebenden Zuschauers, sei es der Schriftsteller, der Leser oder die fiktiven Handlungsfiguren. Daher wird das Sterben als ein Prozess der Ansicht eines erschaffenen, zur Schau gestellten Objekts manifestiert, wodurch der weibliche Körper als ästhetischer Gegenstand wahrgenommen wird.
